Hi, well since no one else seems to have answered you I thought I might as well put my 2 cents worth in . When my son was 2 he was diagnosed Autistic with ADD and Epilepsy. Sorry but I disagreed with their diagnosis. I took him to see a Doctor specialising in Natural Medicines and was given a more logical (for me) reason for his behaviour/health problems. That reason, well I was told that some children had a bad reaction to foods prepared using the microwave and, since that was my only cooking source during my pregnancy, he was one such child. It sounds weird (I know) but I came home, got rid of my microwave and spent the next 15 years without one, and have a normal son as a result. He is not the only child I have known who has improved when food is no longer cooked in a microwave, however I realise this might not help your son, it's just something I have found helpful Anyway, that's my 2 cents for what it's worth

Well, I know it's a different way of thinking that I wouldn't call a disorder unless it clearly negatively affects one's quality of life. While I've never been diagnosed, I have some mild Asperger's tendencies.

(I read the "You might be an Aspie if..." list and was able to add, "...if you have to get up at 7am but still sit up until 3am reading the 'You might be an Aspie if...' list and saying over and over, "Yep! That's so me!")

Some aspects of mild autism can be pretty handy, such as my ability to contentedly get absorbed in programming code for hours on end. Of course, my inability to find my keys afterward makes up for a lot of the advantage. Which is part of my point; it's give and take. Loss of functionality isn't necessarily inherent in autism; the problems are largely (and this is wonderfully ironic) other peoples' inflexibility in dealing with the autistic person.

The mind is flexible though, and there's a lot autistic people can do to train themselves to communicate better with neurotypicals.

Thank you music. I read there is a higher rate of siblings begin autistic. Anyone in your family such as nieces or nephews being diagnosed? Unfortionatly its pretty ruff to diagnose us older folks with this, since its still new and we have learned coping skills threw the years. It hard to test for something that been learned arround...

Well, I worked with Children on the Autism Spectrum in my Musical Therapy days...even dated a guy with Asperger's once. The "condition" is so broad, I would really need to address your questions personally...but I do recommend as much creative expression possible to help you and your child put the puzzle pieces together. Personally...I would view the "condition" as a gift rather than an illness or handicap...that's a good place to start. How wonderful to look at the world through an new set of eyes? This is what inspires us to carry on. Perhaps you could get involved with your school districts SEPTA group for networking and immediate answers...but feel free to email me if need be.

We parents with these children are way ahead of ya there Zen.

It is broad and it does very, HUGELY. new stats state 1 out of 166 children have an autisum....AWAARENESS IS SO IMPORTANT!

First I'd like to say thank you for your posting Zen.
The best resource I have come across has been teachers. While most doctors may have a few cases, teachers get fresh set of students added every year. So to those that reading, check with ya teachers!

Thanks for the heads up on SEPTA, first I've heard of suck a thing. And Boston and I have been threw many school districts.

I will have questions that I may post here personally, and Ill always take some token for whatevers shared. But to answer your question Zen. Both.

Short, I work for a nonprofit company where I go into people's homes and take care of them, all of them with developmental disabilities. Almost all of my clients have autism. Some may need assistance with their daily routine, and some need help trying to adapt socially. It all depends on what end of the spectrum they're on. If you decide to put your son into a company like this maybe when he's older, not only will it help you, but your son. If you need more information now, it would be a good idea to get in contact with a place like the one i work for. There are always classes available to the public about autism. Hope this helped...Tasha

HI Shorti-Burns--My team teacher this past year had a child with autism. Smart little bugger but stubborn as all get out. Had a lot of trouble adjusting to new situations. So when we were to have a fire drill or something, our 2 classes would practice ahead of time so he wouldn't be surprised by it. My team teacher did use a lot of unorthodox things when working with this child but they worked. For instance, he started chewing on his fingers, so she threatened to chew on them also. He stopped. When he was being stubborn, all we had to do was say "I'm going to call Mom and no gameboy tonite". He loved his gameboy and would usually do what we wanted then. When he wouldn't eat his lunch, she would go over and pretend to take it away so she could eat it. Then he wanted it! She was really great with him.
We did get a few laughs with him also, like the day he "fired" me. We told mom about it and she said yes, he'd fired her a few times too. Never a dull moment that's for sure.
He would check my watch every day at recess as we had shown him what time he had to go to his resource class. He was really good about leaving when he was supposed to.
I think you're right when you say teachers can be a good resource.
Somewhere in my school email I have some things on autism. If I can find them, I'll send em to you, ok?

A girlfriend of mine has three children, two are autistic and the other has a hyper sensory disorder...not sure of the exact name. One of the autistic children is very aggressive the other is quite mild. She is a single mom and I would hand her the world if i could she has more patients than anyone I know!

I work with pre-schoolers who are on the autistic spectrum. And lets, get this straight - the spectrum is huge, as you well know.

The parenting rules are the same to a certain extent - although the professional advice should be used as a guideline only - I can't stress this enough!! You know your own child the best. These kids do not fit into textbook boundaries marked by paeds... They are frustratingly fabulous and on a bad day can shake the ground from under your feet!!

I absolutely agree with graycat about the nutritional side. Many reports have shown that certain foods turn a reasonable day into a nightmare - I had my daughter tested by a homeopath and the results were astonishing.

I would suggest that you have a look at the benefits of a gluten free diet. If you check out the sunderland university (in the uk's) investigations and see if they could apply.

I wish you well with everything

xx

Not only with meds, but time itself. Boston used to be a head banger and a self biter, but that all just seemed to go away.

We left wisconsin to move to montana, i was worried about the leave of education my son was gona receave, and i was suprised. We just happen to get lucky and end up at a good school with a great teacher. She chopped down the foucs time from 20- 30 mins to 10, and just makes up for it threw out the day so instead of one math class for 30 mins held have two for for 10 mins. His grades went up.

now i have a new issue. Weight. He spent the last 30 days at moms and packed on a good 30 lbs.
Your friend, Burns

Sounds like "someone" may have shoved food in front of him to keep him quite and "entertained". (I've seen that before and it always breaks my heart...kids, especially someone like Boston, need structure and bounderies ~sigh~)
