All parent 'specially single parents are gourmet chefs. From the quick and easy slop from a box to the holy cows I never would have thought of that.

Tonight food critic Boston and the ever so Im afraid of food Jeyden dinned on chili mac and cheese.
Boston the gutandater, gives it a 5 finger and two check full spit of goooood.
Jeyden after the first pinch nosed swallow gave it a 2.

Ya just cant win.

What creations have you hit and or missed with?

brownies are always a hit, raw cookie dough aka breakfast of champions.
you're probably talking real food, lol pasta w/olive oil & parmesan cheese.
chicken tenders always work, pot roast or salmon. mine are pretty good eaters when they want to sit still. mine won't eat "mixed up" food like a casserole.

Breakfast:

Makya's rice recipe... has been popular, since I was a kid.

Oatmeal, brown sugar, walnuts, raisins, topped with maple syrup, with toast.

Cream of Wheat and brown sugar, with toast.

Homemade biscuits and white sausage gravy. Take 1/3 of biscuits and before rolling, add a little sugar and cinnamon; make a good snack later.

French toast, dipped in eggs, milk and cinnamon, fried in butter and glazed with powdered sugar; tastes great cold from fridge.

Eggs and milk, beat together and put in a sprayed bowl, add cheese, microwave and put between biscuit halves... kind of like McDonalds.

Dinner:

...Fried, hamburger patties, bacon, tenderloin, fried chicken strips, etc., placed over toast, then top with fries and then pour Campbell's cheddar cheese over the top of all of it... some places call it a Horseshoe.

...Red sauce and pasta, with garlic bread.

...Grilled, just about anything is good; chicken breasts marinated is always good.

...Polish sausage, cut diagonal in bite size, fried with a little Worcestershire and put over a bed of sweet rice above, but make pink rice with a drop or two of food coloring.

...Sweet and sour pork or chicken over rice as above.

...Taco salad; half corn chips, half tortilla chips, lettuce, tomatoes, cheeses and mix in Catalina dressing, add cooked taco hamburger and served on large, soft tortilla shells with sour cream.

...Homemade pizza is easy, while making sweet pizza sauce and put whatever want on top with cheese.

...Better maybe is pizza sticks; take homemade pizza dough, wipe with beat up egg, sprinkle some sea or kosher salt and Italian seasoning, cut the strips with a pizza cutter and bake...serve with some of the pizza sauce, or Campbell's cheddar cheese sauce.

...Or, like a soft pretzel, you can take the rolled raw pizza dough, cut in strips, soak in boiling water with baking soda until they float to top, put on pan, sprinkle kosher salt and bake.

Bored yet? ...

We always made the English muffin pizzas and let them put their favorite toppings on....

Also.....drop canned bicuits in oil....fry, and drain....dip in plain sugar, powdered sugar, or cinammon sugar.

Then of course the old ants on a log.....celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins
were a healthy standby

My mother used to make us milk toast.....toast and put warm milk on top with sugar....actually it was good...

Some really good ideas here!

You would be surprised how many people look at me like I'm crazy when I speak on it.

I thought everybody knew about that.

...Yes! ... you can buy those cheap cans of biscuits for something like 3 for a $1, cut into 1/4's and deep fry. I tried shaking in a plastic bag with powdered sugar, but sometimes to hot and melts through... so an old margarin contained with the lid works well.

...Never had "ants on a log" ... with the "ants."

Makya: You would be surprised how many people look at me like I'm crazy when I speak on it.

...Oh, but it is good! ... Mom made it often and can be made with a microwave in about 10 minutes or less; just add the extras after the rice is done.

...I have never seen a kid that did not like the glazed French Toast, hot or cold. But my sons preferred the biscuits and white sausage gravy... they had an hour's worth of chores in the morning before school and it stayed with them until lunch time.

==============

...Right now, most everyone has dandelions and before they flower, the greens (leaves) are good; sort of like spinach lettuce. If you like them crispier, just put in the fridge for awhile. The roots can be dried and then run through a coffee grinder (or chopped up) and used for coffee, or blended with coffee or chickory. And the flowers can be used to make wine.

With my younger son...... . I have given up and simply feed him what he will eat and also is nutritious.

One of my older son's favorites was BBQ wieners. Just slice up hot dogs and cook down in your favorite BBQ sauce.

yes Pammie...my kids always liked the pigs in a blanket

One thing about those 3 @ $1.00 biscuits in a can.....when the kids were younger and as a single parent just trying to make ends meet and come up with really cheap meals.....they worked for a couple of things...

I baked the biscuits and poured a can of creamed chicken soup over them and opened up a can of peas to stretch the dollars....all for around $3.00.......
Sad, but true....

Also used those biscuits for the dumplings in a whole chicken I'd cook.....break em up into halves and let them simmer in with the chicken....very good actually.

Maybe this thread should cover meals for under $5.00....

~grin~ I could have written a whole cookbook with those "Meals under $__" menus (The butcher at the deli counter would look at me funny every time I'd ask for x number of slices of cheese or turkey breast or x number of hot dogs. "Portion control", both in food quantity and dollars )

And I grew up on rice with milk and sugar, too. We didn't add cinnamon or raisins, but that sounds rice pudding-ish. Yum.

I've sprayed a 13X9X2 w/ nonstick spray. Add Italian sausage links, pricked to release the fats, and topped with sliced green & red peppers and onions. Sprinkle with about a cup of water. Cover w/ foil and bake for 45 min @ 350*. Serve on sub rolls w/ jar sauce and provolone, or your favorite cheese.

I remember cooking a steak dinner for mine, and they were upset at the sight of it because they were hoping they could have cereal. Stuff like that used to frustrate me, till I decided hell, some nights its easier for me to just let them have it.
