Acceptable Child Support Purchases...... |

My ex husband has recently asked me to show him proof of where his child support is actually going. Now, we have been divorced for 4 years, and during those 4 years, he has paid CS for a combined total of about 2 years. Since day 1 when I've received my CS I've kept all the receipts. I keep that money separate from the money I get from my job. It wasn't court ordered to do this, and he has never asked me to do this, I just do it for my own piece of mind and just in case I would ever have to show proof to someone of a legal status. Here in Ohio, the CS comes on a debit card so it makes it that much easier for me to maintain a complete record of where its going.
Now the real question is, is gas for my car an acceptable purchase for CS. As most parents know, kids have lots of extra running around that needs done. FOr instance, my daughter is in karate, girl scouts, and in the summer she plays softball. So she benefits from the gas, so in a sense I'm spending it on her. Now that gas also gets me to work which pays for the other necessities, such as mortgage, utilities, and groceries. I only receive 70 dollars a month for CS so its obvious that that won't cover all those expenses. Now I also use that CS for things my daughter wants, such as snacks, toys, karate and girl scout fees when I don't need it for gas. The only time I do use it for gas is close to payday when my cash flow is running low.
ANyways, to put my ex husbands mind at rest I showed him the boxes upon boxes of receipts that I have, and he literally threw a fit when he saw the receipts from the gas stations.
So, is gas an acceptable CS purchase???

if my x asked me this i'd laugh at him. i don't know if we're actually required to show them where the money goes but i think the fact that his kids live in a home, have clothes on (most of the time) & full belly's is good enough. there's no way i, personally, would show him any kind of reciept. i support the kids 90% while he's about 10% & behind at that. He'd have to take me to court if he wanted to see reciepts, then i'm just gonna show him the medical reciepts i haven't submitted to the court yet for him to split w/me. i don't believe there's any specific list of what you can spend CS on, maybe check w/friend of the court.

In NJ also on a debit card. The amount a week he pays for three young children covers groceries. It is a joke
For your question, yes, if you drive the children, it is an acceptable purchase.

What makes me sad is that my children don't care one way or another.

yes, but you need NOT show him receipts for where that money goes! My ex thinks the little money I get is too much! LOL -- he has NO clue! He gets off easy!!! And, was that a type-o....$70 a month?

And, was that a type-o....$70 a month? Nope, no typo lol. thats what its set at. And that actaully a 15 dollar increase from when it was originally set.
I'm not really complaining about the amount. I'll accept anything. Every little bit helps.

This is a painful question and in the end, it really has little to do with money. It is all about the quality of both parents. For some people....money talks, my ex was no diffeent. But I used it to all of our advantages.
I do not take child support. With stipulation. He must be a wonderful father, and YES that is easy to measure.
He must spend time with her. Expose her to his interests, all the things that we actually differ in. This way she is exposed to twice the wonder.
If she needs basketball shoes, taking a school trip, or needs a uniform....he pays half. Willingly and easily.
When she has a fundraiser for school or an extra curricular activity...he must participate.
Cheerleading, soccer, volleyball, basket ball, he must attend every game he is physically able to.
One a month we have a family dinner. When he comes to pick her up...he stays for an extra 20 minutes and has dinner at my table (with or without his girlfriend...she is welcome as well) so that our child can talk to us both at the same time about her world and her place in it.
He must provide health insurance for her and pay for half of all medical bills as well as dental.
She must be a priority in his life. Something he values above all else. And he does.
Did I use money to accomplish these goals? Yes I did. He was either in or he was out. And he found that not only was he an exceptional father, he seriously enjoyed it as well.
It is perhaps the greatest thing we have ever done for each other and when handling somone with kindness and respect, you can find a way to see their good more than their bad.
I firmly believe this.
