Its not a safe world anymore, the more you can find out about the potential babysitter or care taker the better off we will be. Word of mouth ain't as safe as it used to be, nor as reliable. What one has done in there past may not be an issue for Mrs Smith when she tells me the name and number of her child's care taker. And online search seems pointless, very little info with a hefty price tag.
What is a person to do these days?

....Depends; if the neighborhood girl, I already know them. If a stranger, have them sign a release for a criminal background, as well as a credit check, while researching their references and absolutely make certain their photo ID is actually them.
....And then, go to X10 and pick up some very reasonable surveillance equipment, that if you want to, you can watch (and hear) everything going on at home, inside or out, from anyplace in the world, or simply record to watch when you return.

I sent mine to a daycare when I first went back to work, he came home with mono and roseolla within the first month. He has had babysitters since.
I choose the babysitters who do not babysit for money, but because they enjoy kids. His last babysitter could not have kids and my son was the only child she babysat.
The baby sitters who do it purly for the money and who have 8-9 kids at once are the ones who scare me.

being a daycare provider is scary. there are way too many rules and laws a person has to follow..for what a few dollars per hour? i do have to admit that there are a TON of people out there that should NEVER be caring for children.
but did you know...anyone that cares for a child (friend or even a relative) whether it is full or part time, pay or no pay..by LAW they are suppose to be licensed? i think this is BULL! soo if a parent wants the child to go to grandmas for care-they are suppose to be licensed thru the state.
how many kids/infants have a pacifier or blanket or even a 'special toy' they like to sleep with? NOPE, can't have them-against all rules! again...BULL!
to be licensed here in MI we have to have a finger print and background check each year...we have 'classes' we have to take minimum of 16 hours (which can cost anywhere from $10-$300 and are not able to be credited for in your taxes) and the classes..WHAT A JOKE! the classes are like 'infant crying-what does it mean'...'toddlers..the stumbling years'. in these classes i have learned NOTHING new and if an idiot was to not know these..i would surely be surprised...
sooo even though i try to go by state rules and laws...there are a ton of things i feel that should not be in there.
the best thing to do is to do an in home interview and during the hours they have kids that are awake. don't wait for 'naptime'..see how the caregiver responds to kids when you are there... use your gut instinct on people too...you are usually the best one to tell if someone is 'good' or not.

When I was looking for a daycare for my oldest so I could go back to work I POPPED in to a few unannounced to see how they were treating the kids.. some had policies of no drop byes by parents those were immediately rejected... then the one omg I had never seen kids in such a um well what to cal lit *stupor*?? I mean 2=4 years olds in zombie state .. another rejected .. and one was soooooooooo antiseptic and not one child had a smudge on them 3/4 through the day I doubted they got to be KIDS at all .. then I found the most wonderful place...a block from my job .. they welcomed visits by parents .. the kids were allowed to be KIDS and play and get messy and they all looked HAPPY!!! unlike those other places It took my baby all of about 2 seconds to dash off to play and omg how well she learned the caretakers were always watching alert and caring she loved her *pretty school* (pre school) and I was blessed to find it and be able to send her there... Its always a good thing to SEE if you can how the kids already in their care react to them .. are they happy or afraid are they subdued or vibrant ??? nothing quashes a childs love of life and a love of learning than a caretaker that scares them or intimidates them or who doesnt let them be KIDS!!!

but did you know...anyone that cares for a child (friend or even a relative) whether it is full or part time, pay or no pay..by LAW they are suppose to be licensed? That is not true. Each state has its own laws but even in Michigan it is stated that childcare homes are for the care of "unrelated" children. In most states parents & related guardians do not fall under the state child caregivers definition.

I think it's a good idea, unless it's the young person that grew up next door.

my x used to do some babysitting for a few kids at times, and if any were still there when I got home from work and she asked me to help her with them...I would tell the kids to all go outside and play in the traffic
