I took my 17 year old daughter shopping for her junior prom dress last weekend and between the dress (that did NOT look like a hooker dress - hard to find), the shrug (the jacket thing to wear over the dress because its sleeveless and she doesn't want to look like a skank - plus she's afraid her boobs will fall out, which is a distinct possibility) shoes (that she will never wear again because they match the dress and NOTHING else in her closet) , jewelry (that I get after the prom because it is floral and pretty and she is more into peace signs and pot leaves - not to smoke just to shock people), petticoat (those ruffle thingies that itch like crazy), and bustier that will hold the "girls" up without popping them out - I spent almost $600!!!! Will someone please pick my jaw up? And while you are at it, fan me cause i'm feeling faint!
I figured on about $400 for everything, wow boy was I off! And most of the dresses look like they belong on the girls in dancing with the stars. I refuse to send my daughter out with her boobs hanging out and butt cleavage in full view. Not to mention that she wanted a dress that not everyone else is wearing. Ok, she's 6ft tall so i'm pretty sure we got that one covered, but still?!? Do parents really allow their daughters out of the house like that?
My kid will wear this dress this year, and next year, plus we have a friend who will be using it to get married in this summer (the dress is cream and gold and this is her second marraige so it works), so I guess it will be worth the money.
Am I the only one who spent this much? Someone please tell me they spent more. I feel like I am now overindulging my kid when I just want her to have a nice prom. Is it worth it?

I made my daughters dress (she designed it) and was the chauffer for her and her boyfriend to the dance.. and OMG parents DO let their girls walk around like skany hos I couldnt believe it and even worse were the ones (now im gonna get a shit load of flak about this but ..) the MORE than a bit overweight girls dressing in little more than bandaids OMG they looked horrible and not just cheap sleezy looking just blech...and they looked uncomfortable to boot constantly tuggin at their clothes to cover their asses there were a few in slashed up dresses with NO underwear on un friggin believable ..and its the manufacturers that are mostly to blame...there are none really that cater to larger sizes but trendy and in the regular to smaller sizes they are mostly sleezy creations we had looked for weeks and NOTHING was for sale even in the spendy shops that was not something a hooker would wear on Hollywood blvd... and my daughter was not hard to find a fit for .. so luckily I sew and for about 60 dollars or so I made her prom dress a little daring but she was covered and still looked like a princess Beccas prom I think that the fashion industry has gone off the deep end even the little girls stuff looks trashy .. heck just look at the BRAT dolls and see what they think kids should model themselves after and Gypsy hon it really depends on the availability of clothes and the area where you live how much you have to spend...I know here you can get a Quincenera dress (coming out dress) for about 100 and they are just like princess gowns whil in other parts of the country they would rake in about 500 heck even to make they would be spendy it all depends on what you look for yanno I hope your daughter has a wonderful Prom and I wanna see pics okay maybe over to the other place

my kid is built like a linebacker. 6'1" tall and wears a DDD bra. So we had to look hard for a dress to fit that wasn't the bandaid trash or tent maker dress. Her dress is JUST the right length and had to be taken in a bit (by yours truly) in the waist to fit the boobs and waist. And she really, really REALLY wants to wear high heals. It is the prom after all. She will look great and there will be pics on the other site!!!! Thanks becky!

It is beautiful, Becks! Good job.
I've only had to rent tuxes...the boys both got their own corsages for their dates. Their Dad lent them sleek cars to drive. I gave them each 50 to put toward dinner. If it was more than that-they made up the difference.
I don't remember how much my prom dress was, but I had shoes and wore my Grandma's shrug (shawl) (who woulda thought those would be popular again!)

Since the dress is going to be reused, especially for a wedding, just have them pitch in on the price.
Overall, lady you got taken big time LOL Yeah, not only lived through prom, but in my case, two the same year because the couple went to two different schools, so double everything except the dress. Those girls coming in with all that crap, and the SQUEALS (my head is still ringing). I just sat there asking logical questions, "How much was that?" "Ever even going to wear it again?" "Did you keep the receipt for that?" Nope, I didn't put in penny one. These kids were teenagers, old enough to get their own jobs, and did, so no reason why I should pay for all this stupid crap. I did go so far as to detail my antique muscle car myself, for them to drive, since they preferred it to some boring limo, but that was it.

Make the kids pay for it. After all, prom is always the same time of year so let kids learn to plan ahead. My opinion is it's a great disservice to our children to buy them all the "extras" they think they need. That is why high school & college students are graduating & still can't balance their own checkbooks.

I could have had her pay for it, but since I wont let her work (school first) until the summer, she is broke. She is doing extra babysitting for money for dinner (girls going together pay for their own food) and helping my brother roof the house to pay for the dress. It would have cost MUCH more than the price of the dress to hire someone to put a roof on the house. It isn't a "real" job, but she is working her butt off. And I don't feel like I'm spoiling her too much. She can handle money, she just has other priorities right now. Like getting her ACT scores up and filling out scholarship apps.
Oh and Becky, you really SHOULD go into business! You could make a mint!

Good for you, Gypsy... Yep, education should come before job, and they are our responsibility for oh too short a time...

gypsy "helping my brother roof the house to pay for the dress." And you don't think that is a real job LOL Well, maybe a temp one, but dang, should have mentioned that in the beginning! Also the bit about working for the dinner. At first it sounded like you were just blowing money left and right and she wasn't doing anything to earn it. I MEAN ROOFING!!!!!!! Wow. Heck, tell the kid I give her props for not being one of those frilly, worthless women! I do agree with the bit about education coming first.

Sambino is not one of those frilly girly girls. I had to bribe her to wear a dress and not a baby blue tux. She is really a great kid, and given all she does to help her friends and those around her, I think the money was well spent. She is going to grow up so fast that I'm glad she wants to spend time with her mom and not get pregnant or high. I'm pretty blessed in the kiddo dept.
