I live in the Tacoma area and am looking for recommendations for live music and comedy. I know about Jazzbones and the Comedy Underground. I'd like to find some smaller venues than the Emerald Queen, White River, and the Tacoma Dome for concerts and great live music. I wouldn't mind some good ole rock'n roll

You should review "The Stranger", "Seattle Weekly" & "Seattle's Best Places" (Book), http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/bands/ , http://www.nwsource.com/music/guides/romantic_picks.html
Most of these sources contain events occurring in Tacoma as well.

Thanks for the info, but I was also hoping for some personal (and specific) recommendations! Tina

Isn't there some kind of live jazz place out in Ruston? Been there, the music was good....if you are in to jazz.

Have you tried the Swiss in downtown Tacoma? I haven't been there in years but it is a really cool little club.

TRUE what Tahoma said. The owner of The Swiss is a monster blues fan and well connected in the biz... leading to breaking Keb Mo' in Tac, hosting a fundraiser for Al Hendrix with Buddy Guy and Sonny Landreth (mid 90's), and generally presenting quite good-to-national live acts. I saw The Heaters there the last time I was there and they rocked the house. You lika the Swiss -Axe'
