After spending 3 months in hospital last year, have to say absolutely terrible and hopeless and unencouraging (if that's a word)

Hope it wasn't some chick you met off this site that put you in the hospital in the first place.

I have had 3 emergency visits to Burnaby General ER and was very impressed with the treatments and the compassion of the nurses.

Also, my mom had a few recent encounters with another ER and service was top notch!

I spent a large chunk of last year in the hospital visiting my Father through arterial bypasses in his leg and rehab after an amputation. I saw many competent nurses and doctors, but I sure also saw room for improvement. There were too many mess-ups with the medications. Not the wrong medication, but problems getting the pain medications that were on a request basis when asked for and too often not being told what medications were on a request basis.

There were also some - I think - Doctors who worked for departments that were just ducking in to see Dad so that they could make a claim that they had seen him and book in for money for the visit.

Still the people working on the vascular surgery ward at VGH were compasionate and worked hard. I think that it really helped as our family went through a really rough time.

Dad got into rehab to learn how to live with an artificial leg very quickly. Holy Family was very good though compaired to the hotel like facilites at VGH it seemed a bit old and worn.

My own Doctorr does a good job for me getting me appointments with specialists and needed. Of course I am fairly well educated and so can ask good questions and give him the important information too.

I do get very frustrated when pharmacare won't cover medication that I need or I need to wait for two weeks for permission to have it.

I figure that one big change I would make to the system is to make it possible to have one health professional who sticks with you and so knows your entire health situation. Someone that you are familiar with. It used to be that your general practitioner would be that and be with you in the hospital to check up on you and even be in the operating room with the surgeon. My Dad hardly saw his family doctor the whole time, only after he was released did he see her.

I think sometimes when you go in to see a specialist you need someone who knows your history with you.

Anyhow that's my bit of constructive critism.

I am still grateful for the medical coverage we can enjoy here in Canada. I hear so many problems from my friends in the US.

Take Care
