I was watching the news last night and there was a report on the missing oolichan. (sp?) If you don't know, they are a small type of smelt that have a run up the rivers of the BC coast. The native population of BC have harvested fish from the oolichan run each year and depended on them for food and for oil that the fish are very rich in.
It might not seem like a huge problem considering the native population is no longer dependant on the run, but there are more scary issues.
The oolichan are also depended on by the fauna of BC including Bald Eagles, Seaguls, Seals, Sea Lions, Sturgeon, River Otters and more. They all are looking for the missing run of the oolichan.
They aren't sure what the cause is whether global warming, over fishing, desease vectors or what.
I figured that this issue was worthy of posting about.
Take Care,
