Because unfortunately for me (and probably a lot of other people). That's when I do most of my deep thinking, stuff like religion, politics, the meaning of life, love and any other topic that can't be solved in one day. It doesn't help that I just finished watching the movie, The Devil's Advocate and it got me thinking about things like what I've done wrong and what I can do better, how I can be a better person, annoying stuff like that. So I can almost guarantee I won't get much sleep tonight. Not because the movie scared me, but simply because of the thinking about a whole bunch of philosophical mumbo-jumbo. Other that not watching movies like the one mentioned above, does anyone have any advice for slowing down over active minds? If you do have any suggestions, ANY at all they would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Considering that it's 5 a.m., and my alarm just went off, and I've NOT been to bed yet with this stupid back pain, I'm afraid I can only empathize and not help. I'll be watching this thread along with you to gain any valuable insight. Thanks for the post. (I don't hate nights though. I happen to love them.) My mind just goes full-speed when I finally snuggle into my bed. Weird....

In my opinion the better sleep you get the better you can tackle these mental challenges you have decided to take on. However, I too have a very active mind and I appreciate it is not always that easy to get to sleep. The best method I have found is to read as much as possible on a different subject, have a couple of pints of Irish stout with a heavyish evening meal (without cheese in it) an hour or so later than usual and then a malted milk drink before you hit the sack to send you into that deeper sleep. I have found that this sometimes allows me to wake up earlier than usual as my body has had that deeper sleep that it needs and therefore wants less shallow sleep. I don't seem to remeber dreams this way but remember CHEESE IS FATAL! sadly I love the stuff. I prefer to say "I like mornings". Great movie by the way. How could you possibly not think about it's message if you have a conscience? Very best of luck to you. Kind regards, Wishdish

Oh GREAT...I just ate a quarter of a block of cheese.
Well, I never EVER said I like mornings (hate 'em actually )
Good news, though, Kloop...I think MotherNature designs us so that we get all our deepest of thinking over and done with by the time we're 30 or 40. That way we can just accept what's happened (and what's going to happen) without worrying why.

Good news, though, Kloop...I think MotherNature designs us so that we get all our deepest of thinking over and done with by the time we're 30 or 40. How funny that is, SunBabe......leaving me even more thought fodder that I may be suffering from arrested development emotionally.
I awoke earlier than usual ( God's way of telling me to check for an important email) and as consciousness floods in, all the Berlin Walls against despair and sadness that I so carefully constructed as I fell into sleep are temporarily unmanned ( or un-womaned). It takes a few moments to re-man them and arm myself to face the day with the spectres of those thoughts still faintly visible.
But I always do - and activity and productivity are certainly the best topically applied treatments for many maladies.

on the contrary, i like nights best. The money is sweet but i just, sometimes, hate to go to work.
ok seriously speaking, your mind/body is not a machine..even a machine needs some time to cool off. if you didn' t get a sound sleep the previous night, you won't be able to think big/clear the following night( since most of your thinking is done at nights).
just outta curiousity, you signed your name as future ex-huhsband.Dude, do you wish or do you look forward to getting a divorce after marriage or what? excuse my stupidity

Sounds like anxiety--- see your doctor. Paxil done wonders for me. The gears in my brain finally slowed down so I could sleep.

Hi Kloop!! I'm the one to talk to, i have a racing mind also!!! But mine isn't in a bad way, people around me in person, say i'm so broad minded i can take them on a mental trip to never never land as my sister used to say, here's what's wrong, don't muffle it brother!! Uh Uh...Find out what all your interest are and DO THEM!!!, like take me sometimes, i turn on my windows media player with the amplifier box, and let it play music from 1967 to 1973 all night while i sleep, The Beatles Abby Road, Mamas and the Papas, Pink Floyd..YIPEEEEE!!!!!
Or go buy up all the movies you like and let them play while you sleep, it works for me, my daughter thinks i'm weird, but says i'm always up to a new thing and make her think of things she never thought of before, see brother, your brain is holding back what life or you aren't letting it do!!! And people don't need half the sleep they think they need. One thing i've noticed about people is they want to suppress what they think, do it...Earl

Wow thanks Sophie, i really thought most people wouldn't think i made any sense, but i sometimes don't know where to start it think when explaining, i have seen though where people let life or their ownselfs inhibit what ideas of creation their mind wants them to go ahead and do. I hope he was kidding when he said future ex hubby though, because that may mean he's down on himself or feels out of touch, no Kloop, you're one of us people, we're like you!~!!....Earl

That makes perfect sense Earl. When things are dark and quiet, my mind races like an out of control indy car. So I pop in a movie and let myself fall asleep watching it. It takes my brain out of the picture so I can close my eyes and rest.

Some people need quiet, some need noise loud or soft to sleep. I run my floor fan all year round-it soothes me. Maybe a thunderstorm tape, books on tape? Just some ideas!

Hey Loreli!!!! You mentioned fans and thunderstorms, man are we a match or what??? Thunderstorms make me feel great!!! And we have at least 3 a week in Houston where i live close to Galveston a week!!! And they are loud cracking banging lightening storms, wow i love it!!!!!!!!! And i run three box fans in my house even though i don't need them, because i feel the air is moving more, and i like the sound. Here's another thing i love to do, go to alta vista search engine and pull up pictures of all the movie stars you like, then run them off a printer (COLOR), and put them in frames from the dollar store that i get for a buck, those colored paper prints off floppy or my printer behind those one dollar frames look real!!!!!! I hang them up around the house....WEEEEWEEEYIPPPPEEE!!!
I know, i'll pretend i'm aristotle onassis today, my daughter says i look just like him when i wear my sunglasses, and i really do to, but im french not greek, but my family came over here to the US in 1815.....Earl

Great ideas, indeed.
I find that simply composed and articulated piano, versus orchestra, music ( Erik Satie is my nightly choice) allows me to drift away at night and soothingly re-enter the conscious world. If I feel the shadow of a negative or unwelcomed thought, I immediately lead my mind to concentrating on the note structure of the pieces.
Soon familiarity "bleeds" contempt and I am soothed sufficiently to fall back to sleep or stretch and face my day.

It's not stupidity, it's curiosity which to be honest, that is why did it, to arouse people's interest that's all. I hope that answers your question.

PS I just wanted to say thank you to you all for your help and advice it is greatly appreciated. And I will try some of the tips tonight. Thank you very much

Kloop, i never thought about stupidity, what i thought of when i read your topic, was you had a mind full of ambitions and ideas, which means you are intelligent....A stupid person is to lazy to think and afraid of new ideas, a brilliant person has active ideas and a brain that moves, and thinks....Earl
