Mine is December 25th ... because it makes me giggle that so few people realize that it's the date the Romans celebrated the birth of their diety, Mithra. That is, until that pagan myth was absorbed into a new religion and evolved to become the official celebration known to millions of the faithful ... Christmas. Isn't history a wonderfully fascinating subject?

Truth456,
that is so funny that you mention that. i read that just the other day in a book called "Searching for Eternity - A Scientist's Spiritual Journey to Overcome Death Anxiety" by Don Morse.
In the last chapter, "A Hopeful Outlook" on pages 370-372, the author talks about the discrepancy behind deciding the exact day of the birth of Christ. I was shocked when i read the following, on page 371:
"In 354 A.D., the Bishop of Rome decreed that December 25th, a pagan feast celebrating the returning Sun-god, Saturn, (known as Saturnalia) was to be used as the official birthdate of Jesus Christ."
For what it's worth, it was on page 341 of that same book that i first came across "The Blind Men and the Elephant" poem.

Hmmmm... interesting. I'll have to check that book out. That December 25th is Saturn's Birthday makes sense. Dec. 25 occurs about the time of the Winter Solistice, the shortest day of the year. The shortening days were taken as a sign that the Sun was getting weaker. After the Solistice, the days begin to get longer ...... and pagan peoples thought that was an indication that the Sun was getting stronger.
Thus, the Winter Solistice became the "birthday" of several gods: Attis, Frey, Thor, Dionysus, Osiris, Adonis, Mithra, Tammuz, Cernunnos and so forth. It is a "solar holiday," marking the time that the sun becomes apparently stronger day by day.
I don't have the references handy to quote, but several sources led me to that info. Seems there's other things about the Mithra character that may have been incorporated into the new Christian mythology ... such as...
Mithra being born on December 25, of a virgin (I'd read her name was Meri). His birth was witnessed by shepherds and magicians [magi]. Mithra raised the dead and healed the sick and cast out demons. He returned to heaven at the spring equinox and before doing so had a last supper with his 12 disciples (representing the 12 signs of the zodiac), eating mizd, a piece of bread marked with a cross (an almost universal symbol of the sun). Any of that sound familiar? We easily could all be driving around today with "Mithra Loves You" bumperstickers.
Has anyone ever read "The Christ Conspiracy: the Greatest Story Ever Sold" by Acharya S? This author presents a convincing case for the mythological mish-mash of ideas becoming the new myth of Christianity ... and it makes for some very interesting reading.

[QUOTE]Isn't history a wonderfully fascinating subject?[QUOTE]
Yes truth456 his story is a wonderfully fascinating subject. And in addition to Christmas, many pagan holidays were absorbed or hidden by those in positions of power who wished for Christianity to flourish by superimposing a Christian holiday on a day that had been previously deemed a pagan one....nothing against Christianity per se, I happen to be a spiritual mut and take multiple spiritual tenants that I live by from the Christian faith, but I do know something about his story and what happened in relationship to many of our current holidays....

Oh, and my favorite holiday would have to be Halloween
Christmas is fun too though, as long as i keep things simple...can't really deal with the commercialism of it all and so i do my best to avoid this all together so i can still celebrate the beauty of this holiday's meaning without going bonkers ...
