Specific or generic

Please pardon me, after all English was actually the THIRD language I learned and while I was born and raised in the US of A perhaps there were some lessons that I missed in school.
So if you could I would like to get some ideas concerning if someone uses the words I Imagine or in my opinion does that make the statement generic or if they use a particular item or person in that phrase does it make that comment specific?
For instance if I were to say in my opinion some people are liars...that is generic right?

and if I were to say

I imagine KingL would do most anything with most anyone....wouldnt that be rather specific?

Just some thoughts on this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've explained several times how I feel and you're just trying to get a fight started. I refuse to be a part of your little game anymore. You're not worth the time it would take me to respond.

King....... I think to identify the difference between the two, definitions are in order.

Without consulting a dictionary, here are my definitions.

Generic: general or not identified to one theory idea or grouping

Specific: identifiying one particular component ie: idea, person,

I suppose the main difference is in the identification.

some people are liars...that is generic right?
That's a broad statement that could include any or everyone. It does not identify any particular person.

I imagine KingL would do most anything with most anyone

Now that? Is specific. It identifies a particular person by name. Nothing general about that.

However the second part of that comment is generic "anything with most anyone" as it does not identify any particular party nor act. It does indicate that by "anything" any given act is possible and that the "act" is possible with the generic of "anyone".

I don't think you missed anything on this one King. And for someone who speaks English as a third language, I think you do very well.

Ok wicked along those same lines..lets take the 2nd comment..
Imagine you and I and another goup fo people were speaking about elderly and retirement homes. Then we discuss how some ppl do very little with the residents..then someone says...
I Imagine KingL would do most anything with most anyone...

Would that be specific enough to take as a compliment?

conversely if we were talking about sex and someone said....

I Imagine KingL would do most anything with most anyone...

Would that be specific enough to take as an insult?

How bout this one King and WW? I am specifically asking you two.

Someone says it could possible that some people's religious upbringing that gives them the opinions they have. That being a statement based on the fact that we live in a predominately Christian country, one nation under God and all.

Could this be general?

Another person says you are an a$$hole, Kingl.

Could this be specific?

Item A general
Item B specific IMO
But a statement that is partially vague held during a certain context or conversation is specific.

Sometimes the same statement can be taken as a compliment or insult depending on what you are talking about ..

I refuse to respond to this, because it's an antagonistic statement specifically meant for the purpose of starting a fight.

The question wasn't addressed to you Jean. It was addressed to King and to myself.

Hi LilBiker

Someone says it could possible that some people's religious upbringing that gives them the opinions they have. That being a statement based on the fact that we live in a predominately Christian country, one nation under God and all

I'd say that's generic..and also vague but there is one part that is specific and that would be where it refers to christianity.

Another person says you are an a$$hole, Kingl

Specific.

Here's one for you both. Are there random generalized comments or specific with intent to degrade?

moron

brainless idiot

Those seem rather specific, but they could be made more general - as in "women who have sex with multiple partners are skanks and whores". That's a fairly general, albeit stupid statement to make.

women who have sex with multiple partners are skanks and whores[QUOTE]

Yup I'd agree that's a generic statement. . And also a "generalization" of sexually active women.

But "specifically" how many do you think you'd have to have sex with to fit into the "generalization" so that one would be eligible for the label of "skank" or "whores"?

1. Technically, would someone who has "one nite stands" be a "skank" or a "whore"?
2. And who is it that gets to decide whether they are or not? Specifically speaking, of course
3. And is there a time frame reference for the "multiple" partners scenario? As in 1 week, 1 month etc?
4. Would a woman who enjoys multiple partners, and chooses on her own, to partake of said multiple partners, be eligilbe for those labels?
5. If a woman were to go out for dinner and then consentually agree to sex after dinner be considered a "skank" or a "whore"?
6. If a woman LOVES her sexuality, is she too eligible?
7. Is being bisexual "skank" or "whore" material? (guess threesomes are out of the question)..

[QUOTE] That's a fairly general, albeit stupid statement to make
