You often hear the terms "smart" and "intelligent" get thrown around pretty frequently here or anywhere for that matter, in regards to any number of different people, ideas, even things. But what is "smart", really? What determines who's smart? Grades? Degrees? Job title? IQ?
We all know that there are different kinds of smart, so let's not waste too much time going over that idea. Let's put it this way: You know there has been a time in your life when you thought or said, about yourself or someone else, that you, or they, were "smart". What did you mean?
Do you think that you're smart? Why or why not? Does it bother you either way?

Absolutely not. Being smart sometimes means being able to recognize when you've made a mistake. And, that's a big 'sometimes.'
Yes, I think I'm smart. They're are a lot of people who might disagree, or just add "ass" to the end of the word.

Smart, to me, means knowing when you know something well enough to speak....and knowing when it is time to shutup and listen and learn something. Given that definition....I'm smarter than I was yesterday....but not as smart as I will be tomorrow.
See I`m smarter then i was a couple post ago..

Does anyone know Einsteins theory of relativity? The term (SMART) is relative. Where ever you spend the bulk of your time is what you know the most about. This is one term which is abuse quite frequently. A friend of mine is an excellent automotive technician but taken away from what he does everday all day long most would consider him an idiot. Often times I hear people describe him as being smart because he can fix just about anything surrounding a car. Yes he can, but if you put him on a computer he is lost. My sister is an avid reader. She can tell you things that would boggle the mind. But to put them in practice would render her useless. It's all a matter of what you are used to. A term of superiority over another is what some label those for who they admire for whatever reasons.
"He is smarter than John" "Jane is the smartest out of the group" "He is so smart"
AT WHAT?
Because someone knows something you dont, does not constitute being smart. It only means that they have had more exposure to whatever matter is at hand. I myself graduated third in my class from an Ivy League School. When i am not goofing off I run a pretty tight company. With that being said, I dont think I am smart. if you were to put me on a farm and asked me to milk a cow I am sure many would have lots to laugh at. Although I am very seasoned in certain areas, There is still more that I dont know than I do.
Some years ago when I first went to work for bell labs, I bought my dream car at the time. It was an indy pace car canary yellow vette and 86 was the year. Well I took that car back to the dealer over and over for a commonly know problem today called "vapor lock". To make a long story short, The dealer never could fix my problem. The car would continue to bog at 220 degrees. But I met this old man who ran a fillup station in the country who hadnt even attended high school that fixed my problem in 5 mins or less. Keep in mind the dealship replaced the fuel injection system, replaced the tuned port tunnel ram and on and on. This old man screwed my gas cap off, drilled two holes in it. One on the inside at 12 O'clock and another on the outside at 3 O'clock. Beleive it or not the problem was solved. For all intense and purposes, was the old man smarter than the engineers and technicians than GM? Or was the old man more exposed to the kind of problem that I was having?
If you want to consider yourself better than another consider yourself smart. In the meanwhile, The term smart will always be relative to where ever you spend the bulk of your time.
Ok Tink, You can have the soap box back, I'm hungry!

I will say that I was paid quite a compliment by a teenage friend of my kids (long time ago). He said, "Mrs ____, you might not be book-smart, but you're sure figure-it-out-smart, and I think that's the better way."
Grades? Degrees? Job titles? IQ? -- just a way to keep score, and I'm too smart to worry about playing those kind of games anymore, lol.

Smart, intelligent, perspicacious, or genius makes no difference. Silver is quite accurate. Smart is relative. If One has a degree in microbiology, undoubtly they are knowledgeable in that field; but could they(due to being labled SMART)perform a delicate medical procedure? Or better yet, due to that smartness, fly a stealth bomber, and the list goes on? Smart is realtive to what you spend the majority of your time doing; whether you acheived a degree in a particular area or learned by life experiences. (JMO)

Bipolars, such as myself, are known to be abnormally clever and creative while hypomanic.
The down side is that we're known to be very moody as well.

What determines who's smart? Smart is an ill-defined word, so there's no answer to this question that doesn't involve yelling the word "fiat!".

being smart means you never make mistakes Holy smokes, is this incorrect! This couldn't possibly be more wrong. All the smartest people I know make more mistakes, not less. The difference is, their mistakes generally tend to be more sophisticated, and as SpongeBob correctly pointed out, they learn from the mistakes.

I was tested and found to have a genius iq My own personal belief is that the coefficient of correlation between IQ and being a "genius" is nearly zero. IQ is not a measure of anything except itself. In particular, IQ is not a measure of intelligence or "smartness". The only thing IQ is a measure of is IQ.

Does anyone know Einsteins theory of relativity? Funny you should mention this. Yes, my field of study in grad school was classical gravitation (general relativity) and quantum gravitation. My PhD involved investigating semiclassical gravitation. In fact, if you do a Google search on "semiclassical gravitational wave function collapse", you'd probably be able to figure out my true identity. LOL.
Again, "smart" is not a well-defined word, and nobody knows how to test for it objectively, so it's impossible to nail down who's smart or not.
I think a more important question is whether we, as individuals, feel smart.

I'm smart, and they pay me extra for it.
That being said, it is more often than not the case that I got this way because I was so fortunate as to "Stand on the Shoulders of Giants."
It could just as easily have been the case that in a different environment I would not have met certain people, and learned their skills. In which case I’d be a crack whore..
