I wish people would not listen in on these bands.
First of all you're hearing information that is private, especially on medical emergency frequencies. Some information that is dispatched is confidential and really, would you want anyone to know your private medical history?
Secondly, there have been cases where someone who was "listening" was able to actually broadcast and interrupt the dispatcher as she gave info to a crew.
Have some respect please and turn it off

In the United States, it's perfectly legal to listen to any Public Service band. A scanning radio does not have the ability to transmit over the air whatsoever. Anyone who illegally transmits on a Public Service frequency is subject to severe penalties if caught. I myself am a licensed Radio Amateur and never operate out of band.
Many police use a scrambling technique or a cell phone for truly sensitive information. Since it's legal, I will tune into these bands anytime I want to.

Hi, WickedWench!!! And thank´s for you´re comment!!!
Very good question, to? I´m gonna try to explain my opinion to YOU in this subject. I agree YOU 100 that secret info dosen´t belong to anyone else than we´re it´s comes from..... Either I don´t know, just generally how it work´s in USA but if I understanding YOU right and if I read between the lines in your letter I can see that´s alot of leaks of secret info to the commerc... It´s TERRIBLE, and I think Sweden without to hurt any one, got a better moral and ethic in cases like this, we got just a few leaks, mostely from the police and some cause of a good connection to people in the mediabusiness, like me for instance. But, for me are these criminalactions ABSOLUTELY out of question It´s also important for me if aim still gonna have the attention from my customers in media, and surrvive like a freelancer, that aim show respect for what aim doing. Otherwise I would be OUT OF ORDER very soon. Ohhh sorry Wicked I running like an alarm to fast forward, little off side to, in this letter we must driving back to the right place.....YEA LOOK there it is. WOOOOW SUCH A STORY, HOPE YOU DON´T MIND, IT DOSEN´T BELONGS TO ME TO. Well---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USA it´s a bigger country to, than Sweden with alot of states and with diffe- rent rules and I would belive that is one of all the reason´s why it is like this in your country. But, it´s alot of other circumstancies to why it´s looking like this in both of our countrys But, from the deepés´t room in my heart I pray to my scan- ners PLEASE LET ME BE AT HOME INSTEAD TOGETHER WITH MY COM- PUTER AND WITH ALL THE NICE PEOPLE HERE ON MD OR WHAT AIM USE TO SAY... THANK YOU VERY MATCH DOCTOR Sorry, you´ll ask me to if I wanna have some info about me published out all over. Mostely it dosen´t matter for me, also cause I´ve already been invated to another zoo in universe......
PROMISE TO TAKE CARE OF YOU AND THANK´S FOR YOUR TEACHING!!! Jan Berlin/BIG NOSE/Hunter 557

Tim, I wanted to ask you and clearify if it is legal to have a scanner radio in CA. Why I ask is cause living alone it would help me to know local information in the evenings of what is going on around me. If so, where can one be purchased. Thanks in advance...Angel
One time I got rather scared due to hearing sirenes, the helacopters above with their lights, etc. This was about 1:00 am on a Saturday night. I went to bed and about 2:30am a loud knock was at my door. I looked out my bedroom window and men were walking around in civilian clothes. I opened my window and asked how can I help you? They were investigators asking questions about a guy that that was killed by police due to a threatening car chase that ended up the next street over from me.
The guy shot and seriously injured 2 officers. It turned out this guy lived in my back yard neighborhood.

Why I ask is cause living alone it would help me to know local information in the evenings of what is going on around me. If so, where can one be purchased. Thanks in advance...Angel This is the exact reason why people should not have scanners. Just what good is it going to do you to know that your neighbour might be different than you? what you really want to be worried about is the psycho pts that are not locked up. And they are everywhere. How do you know that the info you are "hearing" is accurate? You don't...but this technology gives you the "right" to listen and then judge? Things are seldom ever what they seem when you hear those radio calls so you might seriously want to consider that fact. And it's a very huge valid factor. What you hear is one side and it's broadcasted out. What the cops or anyone else might find when they actually get on scene could be something very different entirely but you are never going to know that, now are you?
Not to mention the gossip that gets started.........ever heard of wrong identity? Wrong addresses? Or the person who called for the police, fire or ambulance in the first place just has a "grudge" and is calling to get that person into trouble? You don't know that because all you're going to hear is maybe the address and some other info that is none of your business. That happens all the time too. But you're going to give lip service to it because you hear about it on some "scanner".?
I happen to know from first hand too many civillians who stick their faces into situations and then twist it into something it's not, then it becomes a major chaotic issue that wastes valuable emergency resources time digging to find the truth when they could be doing something more useful with thier time.
Reminds me of the rubber neckers who just have to slow down at the scene of an accident to "gawk"...meanwhile they're impeding police fire or ambulance from getting to the patient.
Maybe one day they'll stop when they see something really nasty like a decapitated patient laying in the middle of the road.
Carry on folks. You don't know what you're hearing and to listen to it is an invasion of privacy. But if you want the fact your boyfriends tongue ring got stuck on your clit ring and you WANT your neighbours to know about it, or some woman is getting the shit kicked out of her by her partner and YOU just have to know it's your co-worker who would die of embarassment if anyone else ever knew.
Yup..........just because you can access it doesn't mean you should.
It's an invasion of privacy and if you need to know what's going on in your neighbourhood try going for a walk or reading the newspapers.

I'm also a licensed amatuer radio operator... Most people don't realize that the Ham's are a vital communication link... after disasters, Ham's are the first up and operating to assist Law enforcement, and emergency tech's... I've radio set ups in my car and truck, I can listen to many things, by choice I choose to listen to the International space station, and the shuttle missions....
I have friends who are trained "Weather Spotter's", or as I call them, "Fools who don't know enough to come in from the rain", but they watch for tornado's etc...
Yes, some criminals have been caught using scanners, but do we take them away from everyone?

I keep my scanner on almost all the time.. I used to work for a towing and repo company , thats when I got mine... needed to know when our police rotation was up... I see nothing wrong witht the general public having a scanner.. you can easily find out if roads are closed due to traffic accidents.. as far as confidential infor being broadcast, names are not generally being broadcast over the radio, unless it's a high speed chase or something.. as far as emt's are concerned, they don't broadcast a persons name, just vital statistics

Just like anything else, there are those that abuse and miss-use a good thing as an intertainment foreground. The domestic stuff I care nothing about. Formally worked for the Sheriff's dept., so I know coding and what is real in progress. When you have had Sheriff training, you know priorities of safety standards and conduct in the public service.

After Hurricane Hugo (1989), the ONLY communications available were via ham radios on the island of St. Croix!! (before widespread cell phone ownership)...and then the batteries started dying A lot of the looting, panic and such was due to a feeling of total isolation. (Things have changed, for the better, since then...)
When my son was an EMT, we had the scanner on 24/7...I don't recall anything very personal ever being broadcast except perhaps locations. Then again, it was a tiny town and nothing much really ever happened except a few "routine" DOAs, falls, heart attacks and random car accidents...it was kind of traditional, though, to show up at big fires with water, soda and sandwiches for the volunteer firemen. (Everyone just knew to stay way out of the way of the crews and vehicles...)
I don't have a scanner now. I just poke my nose out the door...with my .38 behind my back
