I hate to take up an entire thread for this, so pardon my venting....
My daughter has decided her 'dream' school is Boise State. As in, Idaho.
Idaho? What the hell is in Idaho?
We're outside Nashville, Tennessee. I told both of my kids I'd prefer they chose schools within a twelve-hour driving distance from here. As long as it's not Duke or Louisville, they had free rein. My son is at a college in Michigan. I just took him back for the start of his sophomore year last weekend. An easy 8-hour drive. No problem.
Boise State??? It's like....27 hours driving! And, Idaho, for crying out loud.
What the hell is in Idaho?
Apparently, they have a really good French department and the student/teacher ratio is low. And the scenery and setting is stunning.
And, something about it being in a different part of the country and "Mom, I've always lived on the east coast and I want to go somewhere different."
Damn contrary kid. Idaho? 27 hours driving or a plane ride of several hours?
Idaho?
Why can't she pick the closest party school, like every other normal kid.
Idaho? 27 hours?
MJ - not ready to let my last chick fly so far away.

Somehow, I'm not seeing Lisa with farmboys or cowboys. This is my eclectic, funky, artsy, obnoxiously p.c., vegetarian, Buddhist daughter.
Last year, she made her prom dress out of duct tape. Her boyfriend wore a red sarong, a black wifebeater and flip flops. TO PROM.
She will stick out like the proverbial sore thumb in Idaho.
Damn contrary kid.

Doesn't surprise me that they have a great French department "Boise" is French for timber/tree(or “wooded area”,) and is also referred to as the City of Trees. The French founded the city. In the Capitol building there is a replica of the famous ancient Greek sculpture The Nike of Samothrace (Winged Victory), which was a gift from France. There definitely are some French roots there.
I lived in Boise for a couple of years. It's not a bad place if you're used to that small city life. I grew up in NYC so it was a bit too slow for me. But otherwise it's a really nice place.
Just have to hope she doesn't hook up with a Mormon fellow.

Damn contrary kid. Maybe she loves potatoes? Is there or is there not an "E" there. Dan Quayle got me so damned confused.
It could be worse. She could want to go to Tennessee.
Friends don't let friends attend Tennessee.

UAB, potato singular is without an E. Potatoes plural is with an E. Potato possessive singular (potato's) is also without an E.
Class dismissed.
Mo -- you're not helping. Hush up.

boise like many western cities is great because of the outdoor recreational activites, which draw most people to the region. hiking, skiing, mountain biking, fishing and hunting are high on the list also. it is not very cosmopolitain, downtown is dead after 9pm except for friday and saturday nights, then watch out they do party hard on the weekends.
hope this helps....but i doubt that it will when trying to deal with a teenager. anyway she could visit before making a decision?

Prom gown of duct tape, date wearing a sarong? Send her to Middlebury (in Vermont)...EXCELLENT language departments (even a French-speaking dorm) -- tres expensive but LOADS of financial aid available because it's a private school (which makes it less expensive than a lot of state schools)...and vegans and buddhists abound -- plus lots of kids from all over the country who car-pool to and from school on holidays and breaks.
...also right down the road from Ben and Jerry's factory

Sunbabe, I think I love you. Want to hook up?
Seriously, I checked out the website and the school looks very promising, even if $$$$$. She did get a 33 on her ACT, though, so academic scholarships shouldn't be too hard to come by.
I've sent the link I found along to duct-tape daughter. We'll see how it goes.

Potato plural possessive = potatoes'
As in, "The potatoes' eyes were moldy from storage."
Although, a more user-friendly way of saying the above would be, "The eyes of the potatoes were moldy from storage."
Now...go to recess, dammit.
