Yeah, I know it seems like a crazy time of the year to ask questions about lawnmowers, but we seem to have some talented mechanics here so I figured it was worth asking.
My brother recently borrowed the lawnmower and forgot to refill it with oil. I discovered this when I tried to use it to mow the lawn and the engine seized up. Now I can't start it at all and can't even turn the blade by hand. Is it shot or can it be fixed?

You could probably get it to run again but it will probably smoke like a 2 cycle engine and will bog down easily in heavy grass. Personally I would just get a new one and hide it from your brother.

Remove the spark plugs, squirt Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders and let it soak for a day. That will help to free up the piston in the cylinders, then you can use a block of wood and a hammer to free it up.If that doesnt work, its a frozen bearing and its shot.

Sponge said, "You could probably get it to run again but it will probably smoke like a 2 cycle engine" ahh, but the old two cycles would seize if not enough, or too much oil was in the fuel...
but a modern 4 cycle lawnmower is another thing... if its a Brigs & Stratton, you might get it unstuck, but Honda's and other foreign engines are so tight with tolerances, etc... almost any miscue is fatal to the mower

Buy a goat. You don't have to put gas in the thing.

Buy a goat. You don't have to put gas in the thing. Don't let your brother borrow that either. If he does the don't ask don't tell approach may be warranted.

Thanks for the all advice, folks!
Jankia, if the bearing is frozen can it be replaced or is that too much trouble?

I must resurrect this thread to ask a related question. Can anybody recommend the best place to search for a front wheel for a Poulan Weedeater self-propelling lawnmower (Model # WE 986 RCW)? I checked the company's website, but evidently Poulan does not sell spare parts for this model anymore. I contacted two different dealers near me, but both ordered the wrong type of wheel. I can't simply use just any wheel because the front wheels are connected to the self-propulsion system.
Any advice?

if the drive gear is cast into the wheel imho you could either disable the drive function and "MacGyver" two new wheels to the front of the lawn mower (which would make it a push mower) or you have to bite the bullet and buy a new mower..
if the wheel separates from the axle/drive.. it should not be that difficult for a "MacGyver type" to adapt two new front wheels to the assembly via bushings etc..
(you might luck out and find the same type of (used) mower on Craig's list or ebay. that you could buy for parts... .

RQ- most places here no longer carry parts for my mower, a self propelled, Briggs and Sratton. I needed the cable replaced, had to go to a place called All Seasons equipment. I don't know if you have those there, but the store here could probably help you...
