I originally wanted to hear about those who had died...
.here in Canada it's a 'National' Holiday.
But Tinks and Angel...I agree....the experience of the death of our loved ones can help us to better appreciate and remember the living.
Does the U.S recognize November 11th as a memorium for 'war casualities"?

That's true Tink....but sometimes some of us are afraid to talk about them....to describe who they were...and still are in our hearts and minds.
Rememberance Day(as we Canadian's call it)) gives us 'permission'' so to speak...to say what we might find difficult at another time.

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 in honor of those who have served in the armed forces of the United States. It is a legal federal holiday.
The observation was originally designated in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson as Armistice Day. Wilson selected November 11 because the Armistice ending World War I had been signed on this date in 1918. Wilson wanted to make sure that Americans did not forget the tragedies of the war. In 1938, Congress passed legislation which designated Armistice Day as a federal holiday. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 so that all veterans would be honored. For a brief period (1971-1977), the holiday was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October.
On Veterans Day, special services take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Remembrance Day (Australia, Canada, UK and Ireland), also known as Veteran's Day (USA), Poppy Day (South Africa), and Armistice Day (UK, New Zealand and many other Commonwealth countries; and the original name of the holiday internationally) is a day of commemoration observed in the Commonwealth of Nations, the United States of America, and various European and other countries (including France and Belgium) to commemorate the sacrifice of veterans and civilians in World War I and other wars. It is observed on November 11 to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918. The observance is specifically dedicated to members of the armed forces who were killed during war, and was created by King George V of the United Kingdom on November 7, 1919, possibly upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey though Wellesley Tudor Pole established two ceremonial periods of remembrance based on events in 1917
Sounds to me basicly the same celebrations!

you don't need to have known anyone in the military
the idea is to remembaer all those people that were killed in war serving their country.

On Veterans Day, special services take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Dwain, you brought back emotional memories on Arlington. I lived not far from there in the 70's. Use to go there on the holidays, especially on Memorial Day. One time when my daughter was 3 years old, we walked the whole thing, it took us over 2 hours. She never tired from the walk.

political correctness makes me Yanno, sometimes it's worth taking a moment to think before you puke. CarpeDiem is from Canada (as are many here) and "Rememberance Day" is what we call "Veterans Day" here...It's the SAME THING: 11/11 -- it has NOTHING to do with PC-ness BOTH countries honor their vets on that day...as a matter of fact, they seem do do it in a more serious, more meaningful way.

eleventh minute, of the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. the time or moment the guns fell silent of World War One.
Commonly called "Poppy Day" in UK and more officially "Rememberence Day".
