Acquaintances vs TRUE FRIENDS.....how do you define the difference? |

For me, in my many years of living, I've crossed paths with lots of people. Some I've known for a short time, others have been an intricate part of my life and my self, theirs.
In reality, we have very very few truly FRIENDS, most are just acquaintances...we meet along the road of living life. People we share a space in time with...then move on. Most times we can count on one hand, the folks who would be described as a true FRIEND and for those few, we should truly count our blessings...
I see the word FRIENDS tossed around casually by many, when in fact speaking of even casual acquaintances and it diminishes the meaning of true FRIENDS For me that down grades the value we place on the ones we have in fact given and receive true friendship from.
For someone I consider a friend, one I give my friendship to and accept their....I would never question their decisions on knowing what are the best choices for living their lives....I may offer suggestions for further thought, but I will always be there to support the decision they make, whither its to give them kudos or wipe their tears.
We talk heart to heart, I know their short comings and they know mine....and we accept each other just as we are. We share our secrets, knowing those will never be repeated, nor judgements made.
My friend would have access to anything worldly, materially, I posses, knowing he/she would never default on the trust I give and that he/she would give the same.
When one calls another A FRIEND, we accept the responsibility of loyalty, unconditional love, compassion and caring. WE don't have to agree on everything, but we give the freedom to disagree and that has no negative on the foundation of the friendship we have given freely and shared.
I count two people in my life as TRUE FRIENDS.....most others are degrees of acquaintances. Just my thoughts......what are yours?

The difference?
An acquaintance will get you out of jail, a TRUE FRIEND sits in jail with you talking about what a great time we had.

Acquaintances are the people I see at work and am friendly with. I will help them when I can but they don't call in the middle of the night expecting my help nor do I expect anything from them.
Friends are the ones I would miss meals and sleep for if they needed it. They invite me to Christmas dinner etc.

I thought I had friend for fourteen years ...until I called her at midnight asking if she would come with me to the hospital because I suspected I was having a miscarriage and I was alone and scared. She suggested I call a taxi.
Sorry, not trying to whine...just that Spongey's post reminded me of that time.

Not directed at you Empath
There are times when a true friend refuses to take part in helping a friend do something stupid. I once had a friend call me at 3 AM because her crack addicted boyfriend had taken her car to sell it to buy crack. She wanted me to drive to Toledo and help her stop him.
First off I was too drunk to drive and second it was a lesson she needed to learn and finally did after he went to prison and nearly took her with him.

good post sponge........friends don't encourage or support bad choices.......but they are there to hug you and cry with you.....when you realize you made a mistake....and help you pick yourself back up, brush yourself off and more forward.

So very fortunate I am, to have 3 wonderful g/f with their families, to have been there for me in times of need....... ....to have access to their homes anytime I wish......and to have been there for many many years..... And the same goes the other way around..
Unlucky in LOVE....but so lucky in friendship...

It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them. I had one best friend. She is no longer with me.

Acquaintances are a dime a dozen.....a true friend is "Priceless" and you usually can count them on one hand.
My actual "True" friends....I have 4 that I know I could call and would be there if at all possible....I have 5 counting my ex.....funny but we seem to have a better friendship than marriage.

You probably won't have sex with a true friend but with an acquaintance the chances are better.

For someone I consider a friend, one I give my friendship to and accept their....I would never question their decisions on knowing what are the best choices for living their lives.... I'm "thankful" that I've always had more than a handful of Close/True Friends who ALWAYS have Time to Share my Fears & Tears, my JOYS but not the Boys.... they will pick me up if I am "stranded" or make sure Somebody is coming to take care of me... I think the Main Factor is that we have ACCEPTANCE on both sides and it is Understood...
Acquaintances are the people I see at work and am friendly with. I wear my Mask around them because I've "Learned" my Lesson on Trusting the wrong people, and Monday mornings I always say -- "Good, and how was your weekend??" while my Toes are running faster than my Tongue....
My friend would have access to anything worldly, materially, I posses, knowing he/she would never default on the trust I give and that he/she would give the same. NEVER with my Toothbrush it's a Personal INTIMATE Item....
Empath, Sorry to hear you were "let down" when you REALLY needed a Friend... you must have been Devastated... Hopefully Time HEALS and the memory fades...

I've been incredibly blessed with friends.....and even coworkers can become true friends, especially after decades of working together, and then moving 2500 miles together. We're each others' families too...sharing holiday dinners, and even one death since we moved out here. When we were offered the choice of moving out here, I originally said no, and they actually campaigned to change my mind (for which I'll always be grateful!). Our friends are the families we've chosen, and who've chosen us...I guess I've always wanted to be part of a big family, and along the way, that's what happened...

Heaven .... Our friends are the families we've chosen, and who've chosen us That's a wonderful way of saying, how special and close to our hearts, friends can be
Artemis....I'm "thankful" that I've always had more than a handful of Close/True Friends who ALWAYS have Time to Share my Fears & Tears, my JOYS but not the Boys.... With a true "friend", you can trust your b/f/g/f, your husband/wife and your baby...without a second thought.

The only true friends I have ever had are family. I've never had a real girlfriend or anything.
Acquaintances are just people that I am familiar with and can tolerate.
I'm kind of a loner and keep people at a distance. I have nothing against anyone and I have met some great people, but I am who I am.
