I guess I get mildly agoraphobic in the winter. I don't leave the house unless I absolutely have to-- I want to just hibernate during the cold months, of which there are many in Rochester, at least 4 and sometimes as many as 6. Does anyone else get like this? I wish I had a fireplace and someone to snuggle up to one with.

I don't go far when it's cold out either. Not much work during the winter so I only go out when I need food. I do go icefishing some, but even that only takes me a couple of hundred yards from the house.

Hey Lecriveuse and Wibber!
Back in NY I always claimed I'd been a bear in another life, cuz all I wanted to do in winter was hibernate. Never realized I probably had the SAD thing (seasonal affective disorder) until I got to Phoenix. Easiest place in the world to forecast weather: will it be sunny and hot, or hot and sunny? Got here and turned from a depressed couch potato into a major jock, lost 50 pounds and even what's left is a lot more muscle than fat, went from diabetic meds four times a day to diet controlled with people asking why I'm ALWAYS smiling...it's felt like getting out of prison, and suddenly being allowed to be my own naturally exuberant self.
And if either of you want to visit, let me know!! The days are about 80 and sunny, nights go down to 40-50, but I have three fireplaces, including a 9 footer in the guest room; the house is on a third of an acre, with a pool, basketball court, detached gym with Nautilus and raised bed vegetable garden (currently producing ripe tomatoes). There are all kinds of citrus here, stlil a few weeks from being really ripe. I'm in the city proper but can (and frequently do) walk to a horse farm, or if I just want to hear roosters crowing, I can walk down to the corner. Now all we need here are beaches....yeah, waiting for CA earthquakes to provide AZ with beachfront properties.
Can't promise a snuggler for you Wibber, but there's no lack of men and you may have better luck finding someone that suits you than I've had...of course, in that case you STILL won't want to leave the house...

Heaven, you're a sweetie!!
I hope one day I get to meet you. You seem like a very positive, sweet and giving person.
I've ALWAYS wanted to visit AZ. It would be good for my allergies and asthma, for one.

Wibber - it's easy being sweet and giving now...I see from your profile that you're still going thru a lot of the same things that I have (and many others too)...just remember that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, or better yet, as Mother Theresa said (paraphrasing, but I think I'm close): God wouldn't give me more to bear than he believed I could handle; I only wish he didn't trust me so much.
And Robert...of course you're welcome too...remember, I'm a stone's throw from Deer Valley airport. Or if you're into classic cars, January's showtime! The only month I'd avoid here (other than summer of course) would be February - the TPR golf tournament turns this town topsy turvy...

... I only do one thing on weekends, and that is take my Greyhound to the Park.
... Every time I go out, it cost me money, so I might as well stay in.

Yeah, I'm kinda like that here, in Phoenix, Arizona. Now the the temperatures sometimes plummet to a bone-chilling 70-degrees, I fear hypothermia. It wasn't until about 1p.m. that I was able to walk around in just a T-shirt, after the temps had risen to a barely tolerable 80 degrees. (I'm being facetious, of course.)

Um, I'd rather be dead.
Winter is for staying inside as much as possible. I don't want to do any of that stupid outdoor s***.

After growing up in Ohio.. I have had my share and fill of snow, cold, snowball fights, snow mobiling, etc, etc.!!
I find that the older I get, the less I love the cold and winter months(which seem to be forever here in the north).
Sitting in front of a fire, sipping hot toddys, listening to some good music, or just a fiesty game of chess or scrabble is good enough for me! In the summer.. I am very active in the outdoors.. in the winter.. I hibernate except to work and go to the store when needed.,, or the occasional movie or dinner.. I cant stand being totally cooped in.. but I agree with Wibber... it's good to stay in and enjoy the warmth(especially with some hot company)

Yes Wibber, a lot of people feel the same way u do when i'ts dark and the winter approaches. Like Heaveninawildflower said, some people have SADS and there are different remedies for it.
But maybe it's not SADS though; as fall turns into winter we can almost see nature folding inward on itself, quieting itself, almost meditating within...as if it is seeking a new understanding of its own consciousness as a living, breathing entity...maybe we are like nature, or nature is trying to tell us something...like, now is the time to turn inward, to become quiet, to reevaluate, to meditate on what resides within, what is sleeping, what is active in our lives, what is passive, how are we changing within every level of our own consciousness as living breathing beings....so that by turning inward now, by the time spring rolls around we can give life to something new within ourselves and/or bring something new of ourselves to others...
I don't know, just a thought to share.....

That's a nice thought. I do find myself becoming more solitary, not wanting company (except for my cat!!), and the last thing I feel like doing is any sort of winter sports!!
It feels good to just bundle up and stay warm, though I have no fireplace. Plus all the travel advisories in the winter-- why go someplace if you don't need to?
Right now we're having a reprieve-- 60 degree weather and nearly December!! But winter will be upon us once again by the end of the week. Other than work, food shopping and parent/teacher conferences, I don't intend to leave the house!
Luckily there is an underground tunnel to a small mall at work to go to during my lunch hour, so I can do some Christmas shopping without ever going outside!

I think I do to some extent and I do feel a lot better getting out into the sunlight. I even put a big ole monster picture window in the living room overlooking the lake. Now I can sit in the sun without going outside. (I have to fight the dogs for space)

I don't like winter time at all. I just want to stay in, throw a blanket over me and keep warm and cozy.
