Here in England we call it Boxing Day today. This originated back in "the olden days" when monarchial reps used to walk the streets giving out little boxes of gifts to the "peasants".
What do you guys call today in your part of the world... and why?
P.S. Happy Boxing Day everyone!!

the biggest shopping day of the year, kind of sad huh? It's a big shopping day here too, although this year maybe not quite so big because many high street stores actually had sales BEFORE Christmas this year!!
HMM this year we'd call it TUESDAY Cool, same here too, funnily enough.

Barbados is a former British colony so today is called Boxing Day for me too. And I didn't know why it was called that until you explained it either ...
Happy Boxing Day to you China, Happy Day after Christmas to everyone else ... oh and Happy Tuesday to you Becky!!

Another question China, and/or Fay. What do you do to celebrate Boxing Day? Do you still give presents to the less fortunate?

Luvs, giving gifts to the less fortunate is not done on an official level here like back in the days China wrote about, but many organisations/churches have "adopted" certain areas or shelters etc to make sure that those who really don't have much still feel the love of the season and know that they are not forgotten.
Oh and all of the shops are closed here in Barbados today, no big sales ....
Edited to add: China do you have anything else to add?

Fay's right about the charity issues.... there are many people here that will go and help out with the homeless on Boxing Day, as it generally a day of either rest, sale-shopping and/or playing wth Christmas gifts... its a good day for it for those who don't have families at home.
Nothing else to add.

I think the Day After Christmas should be an official holiday too...like maybe Lived Through It Day. Made It Another Year Day....Digest Day....whatever. Then maybe it wouldn't be such a sudden after that one day of the year.

Thanks for the info on boxing day! Very nice indeed. Always, for some odd reason, thought that had something to do with the 'Boxer rebellion.'
Hey, don't ask me why, just some cross connection in the cabling upstairs!
We have Dyngus (or spelled Dingus) day here in my area after Easter:
http://www.holidayinsights.com/other/dyngusday.htm
(Just posting that to stay in the spirit of sharing information and keeping MD eductiaonal!)
Happy first day of the rest of our lives!

Happy first day of the rest of our lives! I posted the topic on our inhouse chat channel today -
Welcome to the morning after... (Everybody seems to feel hung over, even if we didn't drink).
Next topic will be:
The gods too are fond of a joke. - Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)
You can tell I work in a strange office.
