The problems that you're having with your fingers is something most guitarists encounter when first starting out. I guess you're thinking to yourself that your fingers are way too fat for you to ever be able to play the guitar. The good news is, eventually, after regular practice, your hands and fingers will become accustomed to the chord and scale shapes and therefore all the unwanted string dampening and fret buzz will disappear.

Like a previous poster commented, sore fingers may also be a problem early on and again this is something all guitarists go through. Don't practice for too long in any one session and if you feel soreness in your fingers just take a break until it eases, it may even take a couple of days until it feels better. After a while, the skin on the finger tips will harden and it won't be a problem.

Here's a great guitar teaching web-site, it covers all levels and all styles of playing.

Just stick with it, it will be worth all the frustration in the end...

Lots of music from the 60's and 70's...really any rock...are built on chords C, F and G!

I-IV-V progressions are pretty easy to pick up on, and there are tons of songs that use them.
