A friend of mine fell victim to a scam this week. She was arrested on Saturday night after trying to cash bad money orders. The money orders were sent to her by a man who claimed to be American and was working out of the country. She was suppose to deposit the cash ( 6000) in a bank account for him. She has been chatting with this man for a few months and felt a level of trust. They were suppose to meet after he returned to florida. She is absolutely devastated by this and has never broken a law in all of her life. Apparently she is one among many thousands of women that has been scammed like this.
Dr Phil had a victim on his show. See the link below for more information.

"Dove", here is a great site on those kind of scams and others.

Lots of "Money Laundering" scemes out there, just have to be very keen and wise! If it's too good to be true, it's not legit.

I dont see what the heck can be illegal about trying to cash a cashiers check without knowing it was bad And why on earth couldn't he just deposit it directly to his bank account anyway? Guess I'm cynical, my alarms go off for a lot less than that.

Here in Tennessee, a preachers wife killed her husband back in the summer. In part, she's blaming financial problems brought on by her falling for one of those scams...they send money orders or checks, you deposit them, etc.
I know there are gullible people out there, but still...who hasn't heard of these things by now? And when a stranger mentions money to you, shouldn't every alarm bell in your head go off? Especially if it's email?
Amazing.

as much as all this stuff is talked about on the news and talk shows, you would think everyone would be aware of these scams- but, obviously they are not!!!!

Hmmm, had someone send me a cashier's check as a deposit to buy my house. Took it to the bank it was drawn on (was a bit suspicious), and asked for it to be verified as being valid FIRST. It was drawn off a closed account... But they sure didn't even look at me funny, much less arrest me. The scam has worked on several people apparently. The scam artist asks that you deposit this, and then forward a part of it to an agent or something. Foolish people deposit these checks into their personal accounts, immediately drawing the requested amount and send it off, to find later that the check was no good, so they incur the charges for it bouncing, and lose the money they forwarded. But never have any of them been charged or jailed.

How could I have forgotten all the email forwards I *still* get?
Send this email to seven people or....you'll have bad luck...you'll meet the love of your life...you'll win the lottery....you'll find a pony under the Christmas tree....etc etc etc.
Forward this email to ten people - when it reaches [insert number], Bill Gates will send everyone $100.
Send this email to all your friends and it will return to you with something cool in it!
I especially see them on bulletins on MySpace. Why? Why are people STILL forwarding these dumbass things?
