I just quit cold turkey about 10 years ago I think but I did have a relapse one time, but you just have to find something to keep yourself busy especially your hands. I quit because my Father was told of he didnt he wouldnt be around to see his 60th birthday........well he is 71 now and still kicking.......plus I think about how much better I will feel and be able to breath and think of the benefits all that EXTRA MONEY!!!!!!!!

Deal with it Irish.....just deal with it...you'll get better, honest....swear to the Great Pumpkin.
Another couple of days, things will taste better, smell better and your tee shots will get better.
I only killed about three people when I quit...but I did...I traded smokes for Latinas, both damn near killed me....now I'm free of both.
Good Luck!!! You can do it.
oops..sorry

I never really got hooked but was on track to be a nicotine addict until my then fiance, now ex wife, asked me to quit.
I then smoked only when drinking, then on construction sites, and now that I'm sober I no longer have the impetus to smoke.
Personally, a pack of Marlboros and a case of Bud light always went hand in hand.
I know you have other maladies, so this might not be physically possible for you, but my driving motivation now in my obsessive importance I give my mental and physical health. I'm no superstar, but I excercise twice daily and watch my caffiene and caloric intake.
If nothing else, work a 12-Step program by yourself for your nicotine addiction.
I admire your determination. I've heard cigarettes are harder to break than cocaine or heroin.
Good luck and God bless,
David

I'd smoked for 20 years when I quit. I didn't want to quit. I liked it -- a lot. There was nothing that me and Virginia Slim couldn't handle together.
My son was 4 1/2 and saw the Public Service Messages on TV, "If you smoke, you die." He believed them and began to hang on my leg, "Mommy, don't smoke!!" I promised him that I wouldn't die today and that I'd quit smoking by his 5th birthday. That got him off my leg but how to keep this promise I didn't want to keep??!!
I tapered off. I started cutting back to 1 cigarette every half hour. Then a half cigarette every half hour. Then a quarter cigarette every half hour. Then a quarter cigarette every hour. That helped to cut the nicotine addiction. I don't remember the specific schedule but you get the idea.
There was the habit to overcome as well -- the oral fixation. I used Dum-dum suckers. I bought bags and bags of them. Each time I thought of reaching for a cigarette, I would reach for a sucker instead. Dum-dum brand worked for me because I could chew on the stick for awhile when the candy part was gone.
I hear you, "I don't want cavities and all that sugar!!" Dum-dums aren't addictive. They're quite easy to give up once the cigarette addiction is conquered. You're not going to get cavities from only a couple of months of too many suckers. Also, the suckers ease the wanting to eat everything in the house. Less weight gain.
So it was three things for me: Mommy motivation, tapering off the nicotine, and replacing the hand-to-mouth habit. Don't know if any of this will help you, Linda, but it may help someone. Good luck.

Don't look at me. I've never wanted to quit, but the one time I did decide to cut it back down to near-nothingness, the first two days were spent in the hospital on morphine so...I've no idea what the physical withdrawal was like.
However, upon returning home I really changed my smoking habits. I don't think most of us realize just where that line is drawn between the physical and mental parts of the addiction so distractions really DO help a lot. Take a different route to work, alter your routines a bit, etc. And every time you feel a craving, remember that now it's just the mental habit part and you can easily overcome that type of impulse.
Hang in there!

I didn't want to quit either, but one Saturday night I was down to my last cigarette and my daughter did put the "mommy guilt" on me too and challenged me to see how long I could go. That was 13 or 14 years ago.
I found that drinking ice water through a straw helped with the oral fixation. I can see where the DumDum suckers would be good as well.
Hang in there...you can do this!

Good for you, Irish! I went to a stop smoking seminar where they told us the worst part to break, is the habit of WHEN one thinks they need it. On the phone, the way to work, on break, etc. Once you swap something else for that "motion" habit (tootsie pops, sugarless candy, a toothpick, whatever...) it's easier to break the smoking habit.
I found that I only lit half as many up, but set them down and forgot about them-for the most part.
Good luck! I wish you success.

If I told you how disgusting the smoker's lung looked compared to a healthy lung looked we studied in Anatomy class motivate you?
Or that I purposefully ignore shrinks and sponsors who smoke because of their adddictions?
Or that at four bucks a day times thirty days a month times twelve months means you're burning up roughly $1400 a year which is one month's mortgage payment for most people.
Or that in the last 17 years you smoked, you burned up enough to buy a very nice car?
I'm impressed that you're trying to quit, Irish. Keep up the good work!

Ask your higher power for help everytime you get a craving. When I quit it was so long ago no one was afraid of germs back then. I went around lighting everyone's cigarettes for two weeks. Took a drag off of the cigarette then gave it to them. So, the tapering off may help some people. I have many friends that used hypnotism and acupuncture. Over all, the people that had the most satisfaction were the ones went to hypnotists. Good luck!

Quit now, while you still can, Irish! Don't give up like the many many times I did until I finally quit trying to quit. Did that make sense? LOL The longest I went without a smoke was 17 days on the patch. Cigarettes control our lives...I pray you will be free of the nasty little buggers soon!

I quit when my son was 5, everytime I got a craving to smoke I went for a walk. I took my son with me (he loved it). Easy when you live in Florida.

Irish, even though I am 2 1/2 days late, do you mind if I try this with you? I tried at the beginning of Oct. and failed, but want to try again. I don't have the patch, but I only have a little over a pack and I will be out. So maybe if I cut down slowly I can do it without the patch?

I read somewhere that it's a scientifically proven fact that getting off of heroine is easier than getting off cigarettes...and I believe it, although I've never tried heroine.

While I was at my farm in NC over the holidays, my ex brought me some newly chopped wood for my fireplace (the new wife knew nothing of it, but that's another story.....ha). We had a nice chat for awhile and he told me he was seeing a doctor for some complications from taking a certain kind of medicine....or....it could be oral cancer. He showed me the roof of his mouth and it looks horrible, like one huge blister-like lesion. I asked him if that made him quit smoking and he replied, "nope". I hope the best for him, but if this scare won't make him quit, nothing will. irish, be strong, you CAN do it, don't loose that cute face to the possibility of oral cancer and reconstruction surgery!

It will save money to quit, that is for sure. But you have gone 2 days, so in 2 days more that will be 4 days, and you can do it. They say, if people drop one habit they pick up another. Okay, do something else you did when you reached for those cigs, such as write a letter to your family, or get a simple hobby on the side..Just some ideas.....Earl
