This appeared in an Irish Newspaper this week (so not my words!!). Is it true? I've been to the Grand Canyon a few times - gorgeous place.
"Just when you think things couldn't get any weirder, along come some truly bonkers Americans with what must rank as the crankiest objection to common sense in recent history - although according to these people, all history is recent, since the world only began about 3,000 years ago.
Due to fundamentalist Christian objections that scientists are putting the evil into evolution, studies to test the exact age of the Grand Canyon have been cancelled.
In fact, Grand Canyon National Park is no longer even permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, thanks to pressure from Bush administration appointees.
And as if that wasn't bad enough, a spokesman admits: "In order to avoid offending religious fundamentalists, our National Park Service is under orders to suspend its belief in geology."
Apparently, local religious types are convinced that the incredible landmark is actually a throwback to Noah's Flood, and the shops in the park sell a book called 'Grand Canyon: A Different View' which talks about God's design of the Canyon.
Well, that's certainly a different view all right.
But as critic Jeff Ruch points out: "This is the equivalent of Yellowstone National Park selling a book entitled Geysers of Old Faithful: Nostrils of Satan."
Well, in fairness, there was always something weird about those old - or not so old - geysers.
Stay tuned next week, when Irish creationists claims that the Giants Causeway is actually a load of poker chips left over from some Biblical game of cards."

Well, if our local favorite hole in the ground is only 3000 years old, and it was caused by the flood...I guess those pyramid builders in Egypt that created pyramids 5000 years ago did an even better job than we thought.

I guess we'll never know exactly how old the Grand Canyon is. But I have visited there and it was beautiful. Weird thing is, the thing I remember most is being attacked by an angry donkey.

Hahaaaa!! You owe me a keyboard katts.I just spewed diet coke all over the place. You know how you can take that trip to the bottom of the canyon on a donkey. Well....my donkey had an attitude . Don't think it was happy being rode to the bottom so it took out all of its frustration on me. Lucky for me I move fast. LOL!

That's bullshit. Here's a quote from the official Grand Canyon park web site: How old is the Grand Canyon?
That's a tricky question. Although rocks exposed in the walls of the canyon are geologically quite old, the Canyon itself is a fairly young feature. The oldest rocks at the canyon bottom are close to 2000 million years old. The Canyon itself - an erosional feature - has formed only in the past five or six million years. Geologically speaking, Grand Canyon is very young. As you can see, the National Park Service has no problem saying the canyon is 5 million years old.

It has nothing to do with your so called Bush administration appointees as stated by an Irish newspaper, or by the lies of a critic and the PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch who has been asked to apologize for this conspiracy nonsense. "BTW".Donkeys are not used to transport people at the canyon, they are mules.

hey, they're not my Bush Administration appointees....I'm just relaying a story doing the rounds in many newspapers in Europe. In fact, there's even been a few TV shows on this very subject on Discovery Channel in the last year or two.
Thanks to Toucherin for confirming that since I was last at the Grand Canyon, the information confirming it's approximate age are still there.

Thanks to george and his silly fundementalist know-nothings, this story is indicative of the way large parts of the world have come to view us. Of course it's all nonsense, but the very fact that such stuff appears and is believed shows us how far into the dark ages the know nothings would like to take us if they could. What's scary isn't that the story is false, it's that it could be true.
The age and composition of the Grand Canyon is fully known--not many mysteries left there. I spent nearly and entire summer in the canyon in 1974 on a college geology field trip. Most fun I've ever had earning 4 credit hours in summer school :)

The Grand Canyon is breath taking, an amazing piece of art and at the same time a wonderful mystery, just like Gondwana.
