I think a certain amount of sadness is a healthy emotion to release now and then.
The song "My Immortal" by Evanesence does it for me... as well as a few others.
I allow myself the time to identify with what is making me sad, feel the sadness and then I move on. It's a healthy way of remembering certain people and experiences in our lives.. as long as we don't dwell on it.

Right now Ive got Soundgarden "Fell on black days" playing.
I think some sadness is a good thing as long as a person isn't prone to serious depression. Ive seen things as bad as they can get with the struggle against alcoholism and the loss of my girlfriend to pancreatic cancer.
I look at the bottom of the barrel as a sign of better days ahead. Sometimes I think it helps to remind ourselves that things can be much worse.

Snappygoddess,....
I have that CD...and only play it when I'm angry believe it or not. The only reason I mentioned a classical piece is because I just bought one and the music can make you cry.....well some of it. That just happen to be my favorite piece....
I'm sure we all can be taken back in time when the music affected a time in your life. Just like the movie "Amadeus"...

Too sad, and I get irritated, but the blues put me in just the right frame of mind...listening to Ella Fitzgerald right now, "Blues in the Night" (jazzier than BB or Muddy, but just right for tonight!)

I'm one of those who are prone to depression so I try not to listen to any sad music.

There's a piece entitled "Return to the Present" by John Barry for the film Somewhere in Time... I can't listen to it, because I will get VERY SAD, and start crying uncontrollably! HOWEVER, when I'm feeling sorry for myself, and want to push myself "over the edge"(emotionally, that is!), I'll definitely put something like that on! I could rattle off a dozen pieces of music that would do this, but my brain is shutting down for the evening.

Invoking sadness is a ticket to depression. Not my thing. I would rather get my sad moments as they come rather than bringing it on myself. I have not cried since 1978 and do not intend on starting now over a sad melody. I listen to music that stimulates my type A personality not make me a type B.

Yes Snappy I am a type A! How could one think otherwise? All you get is the surface, dig a bit deeper and you shall agree!

For some reason the sad songs from certain movies doesn't affect me at all if I just listen to the music. If I see the movie and hear the song though, that's completely different.
For me I just like music and all of it has the ability to lift up the day...
