I don't normally mention competitor's websites here, but I thought others should know about what happened to me today. I got an email at my yahoo address from a guy that said he had seen my ad on American Singles. He said he had just moved to my town, and didn't know many people, accept for his roommate. He told me he was new to the internet and didn't know how to attach a pic to the email, but I could find it along with more {email address removed}. He gave me a phone number, but it was one digit short, very clever. .
I wrote back to him and received an auto reply stating that he was only accepting emails through lifefriendships....so I took the bait and checked it out. Of course, you have to join at a VERY hefty fee in order to email. I did read his profile though and he has no home town listed.
This website is sending out bogus emails in order to gain members. They make you think someone is interested and you pay up in order to contact them. I wouldn't doubt it if they started trolling for members here, so look out for them.
Anyone know where or to whom I can report these bad business practices?

unforuntely no... but I seen worse.... some sites use profiles of people who joined to send false messages to non paying members saying they want to meet them... so you join in order to reply and never get a reply.... of course who knows... maybe those profiles are fake too and it only a promotional gimmick.
I got caught in one once but never again.... I can't even remember which site... but now I do not experiment with alternate dating sites anymore.. I only have MD and match now....

I get emails like that from some site called Date.com, always the same pitch, "so and so wants to meet you and has sent you a msg, log on to read it. So I try to log on, and guess what, you have to buy a membership to read mail. What a scam.

That's a good question. Usually in your area you can report bad business practices to a place like the Better Business Bureau, but where do you go to report poor business practices for online companies? (That are easy paths to follow to lodge a complaint?)
I myself have only seen once where a company had resent me a match list of people who were a 'match' that they had already sent before, and called that 'new' matches. I was like, uh, you're kidding right? Figured they did that to entice me to come back and look again...

I only "took the bait" in order to check out the profile. Once I figured out it was a scam, I was out of there.

Good for you, Annie. I'm glad you didn't get sucked in. I had a trial membership on a Christian dating site. I don't think I am going to join. It's not that good and the amount of money they want is rediculous. I can't believe it's actually a Christian site with the amount of money they want.
I just posted a thread debating on whether or not to upgrade on this site. Even for free, you get so much here. I'm really diggin' this place.

Anytime you get a message saying something like "I can not contact you through this site, but you can get me on (some other such site) or write me direct at (some email address)" you can bet credits to Navy beans that it's not on the up and up, that it's not Kosher, that it's all sizzle and no steak and even the sizzle is not very good either.

I agree that we get a lot here for free...I also was a Gold Member for several months and enjoyed the extra perks. I'm like freckles though...it seems like a small amout to pay in order to keep this site as great as it is.

The only scams I get are about how somebody has some money waiting for me if I send info...
Annie-some cities or states did away with Better Business Bureaus....if you do not have one, you file through the attorney General's office...
