Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized this morning 1/29/07

Barbaro battled in his ICU stall for eight months. The 4-year-old colt underwent several procedures and was fitted with fiberglass casts. He spent time in a sling to ease pressure on his legs, had pins inserted and was fitted at the end with an external brace. These were all extraordinary measures for a horse with such injuries.

Roy and Gretchen Jackson were with Barbaro on Monday morning, with the owners making the decision in consultation with chief surgeon Dr. Dean Richardson.

"I would say thank you for everything, and all your thoughts and prayers over the last eight months or so," Jackson said to Barbaro's fans.

I was saddened to hear this too, but can understand the decision. This horse had a huge heart and was a real fighter. Unfortunately this last surgery had the potential to either make things more stabilized for healing, or he would develop more problems. His owners have worked hard at keeping him going. My hat is off to them, and may Barbaro have open pastures and his own herd forever.

Wasn't Barbaro a gelding?

I guess 72 virgins wouldn't do him a lot of good?

As much pain as the horse was in, euthanazia was the only option left.

The poor thing had suffered enough. I am glad his pain is over.
It is extemely painful for a horse to have such an injury.

When I originally read this story of applying casts and such, I thought of animal cruelty...and for what? To make more money off the horse? I am glad the owners came to reason!

Barbaro was not a gelding. He was a stallion - but only four years old when he died.

As a horseperson, and having seen the extent of his injuries and complications, I couldn't see how he could possibly survive long term. I just really wish he had.

If there's any positive side to this, veterinary science will have learned a great deal about the treatment, care and management of these kinds of injuries. I'm sure that 99 out of 100 similar cases would have been euthanized at the racetrack. I give the Jacksons a lot of credit for trying to save him - and not as a breeding stallion, (they never even tested his fertility) but as the horse that had done so well for them. The fact that their one criteria was that he not suffer, and that they stuck to that, says a lot about them.

No matter what though, it bears remembering that he would never been able to have a normal life, even if everything had gone perfectly. With a fused pastern and fetlock, his range of motion was dangerously limited. He could never have run or played like normal horses do. Maybe it was better this way. *sigh*

As a horse lover and former owner of two mares who both lived into their 30's, I can understand why the owner's wanted to give Barbaro a chance to live. It's not about the potential money that can be made on a race horse or even the thought of the exorbitant amount of money that would be spent on his recovery. It's all about the love of horses, especially those that have a "fighting spirit". I can almost see him running, wide-open, across that majestic Rainbow Bridge...

I read this story on MNBC this afternoon, it was very sad to say the least. I give the folks who made this difficult decision a lot of credit, I couldn't stand to see one of my animal children suffer. Barbaro is now in a better place with no pain and lots of happiness.

Rest in peace, Barbaro. My dad never got to see him race. I'm sure he would have loved him.
