I've often wondered why people cut dogs tails off, there certainly is no medical reason to do it, and I'm sure the dog would rather you didn't cut his tail off, so why do it? Is it just to be cruel to the dog?

I think its to make them not have appendages that can be easily bitten or grabbed thus hindering a good *FIGHTIN DOG *

I believe that it is evolutionists that think dogs- just like humans, should have evolved along with humans and dropped their tails.

I agree with Becky, pit bulls, Dobermens etc, are fighting / guard dogs. They cut the tails to keep them from being grabbed.

I have a jack and their tails are cut so when they go in the hole after a rat., there is just enough tail sticking out so you can pull them out. That sounds so bad after reading what I wrote......lol

Maybe sometimes for looks as some people show dogs or buy purebreeds they want to show or stud out and the "looks" factor matters to them because they are making some money or title for the dog.
Someone I know had some big dog and she did the tail and ears because she was showing the dog. It had parents that were champions or soemthing like that and she did intend to stud the dog out.
So, not always for fighting.
My dog has its tail because she is a mutt and I like her tail.

Many dogs fart and wagging their tails blows the fart around more efficiently. I suppose thats why owners cut off their tails. I don't fart which is way I can keep my tail.

Corgies don't all have their tails docked. Pembrokes are docked. Cardigans aren't.
One of my greyhounds has a partial amputation, so that what she wags looks like a demented windshield wiper. A lot of greyhounds suffer from "happy tail" and end up with docking or amputation because they injure themselves from smacking their tails into things.
For most breeds though, it's an appearance issue. I don't really like it, but I find it far less objectionable than docking horses' tails.

Rai, I see several greyts at PetsMart weekly "Meet and Greet" that are up for adoption and have parts of their tails missing. Sadly, they are the ones not adopted and are there week after week.... If I didn't already have 2, I would adopt one of them in a heartbeat.
Ha ha, wiccked....

well i know that most of the breeds that are known for having short tails are docked according to breed standard. some are born with a natural bobbed tail, but most have to be docked. with dobe's and boxers i know their tail serves as no purpose so it is usually docked BY the time the pup is 10 days old. the tail is so rigid and as much as boxers wag their tail if left long it would be broke too often letting the tail to be docked at a later age, causing more pain and stress to the animal. in england...they are leaving a LOT of breeds tails long and this is a problem when showing...the tail is suppose to be long and straight...if it gets broke from being 'happy' they have to retire the dog....
it's kind of like ears on these dogs too...it's more for 'looks' and breed standard then for anything else.
