A New York cabbie returned 31 diamond rings he found in his cab after dropping off the passenger, who had left him with a 30-cent tip on a $10.70 fare.

if you were that cabbie, would you do what he did?

incidentally, are you a bad/good tipper?...be it in taxis, restaurants, hotels etc?

You never know if your boss is testing you or not. haha Better turn them in!!!

I really am a good tipper. I have always thought that good service was worth paying for. Ive been known to leave a $10 or $20 tip for a $10 meal if the service was good.

If I were the cabbie, I probably would do the same thing.

Tipping is something that I am learning to do, unless you work in the hotel industry here it is not something that most people think of, we were not brought up with it as part of our culture but I have gotten wayyyyy better at it, especially in the last few years.

I tip well at Hooters

JK. I tip ok there because the girls aren't that hot and they aren't that nice when I don't go with a guy.

I generally tip well but I am pretty objective about it....last night Jeanine and I went to Pizza Hut and left like fifteen dollars for this waitress because we ordered breadsticks and for some reason she decided to buy them for us. So we decided she should have all of our money.

I would have returned the items simply because it's the right thing to do. Karma has a way of getting back to you.
I'm a good tipper if the service warrants it. The only time I ever left a "bad" tip was for a waitress who was down right rude and lazy. I left a penny on the table.

hooters you meant, right?

you're a champion tipper then..lol.

I tip depending on many factors:

just to name a few,

- the service, good = 20%, bad = 10% and most often less than that

- if I'm with my date( esp. the first date) or if the waitress is hot, she's going home like this ..lol. oh yeah some men eat in restaurants against their will..yanno..stalking hot waitresses

- sometimes it simply depends on my mood

Everything being equal, I generally tip 20-30%

here in china, tips are against the law. so whenever I eat in a restaurant, stay in a hotel or wherever tips are required, I save that money in the bank...I have an account for that. I kid you not guys...I do the math all the time, it's my line of work anyway.

when I first got here, I made a fool of myself and nearly got looked at as a perv or something

Yep.

I always tip well. Too much is better than too little.

Yep-I would have turned them in.
As someone who worked in the restaurant business myself, tipping can make a big difference in a person's pay. If they do their job, they get a great tip. If the food is bad, I complain to the manager. That isn't the wait-person's fault.

guess how much the cab driver got as a reward - a $100 check.....He accepted it, reluctantly anyway just to cover the cost of trying to track the woman down.

what's up with some people? couldn't she have offered more than that?

Katt if the waitress is nasty and the service is not good, they don't warrant a good tip...I have a cousin who is a waitress and she tells me the work is very hard but she still tries her best to be very nice to each customer and to give every customer her best. And sometimes it seems like some waiting staff are just tired of their job and don't give a rat's ass. So no, I'm not going to pay them more than they deserve for bad treatment and crappy service.

yeah LGQ, thats why not everybody can be a waiter/waitress, well a good anyway. that line of job warrants a great deal of sacrifice and patience. I know some customers are a real pain in the neck but you the wait person just gotta do what you gotta do....mastering the job is one thing and being polite is another

I tip big when I'm trying to impress a girl or if the waitress is hot...okay, I'm a pig.

But God forbid if the waiter pisses me off, I've left ZERO tip on dates.

I normally try not to tip much because my own finances are restricted.

Excellent topic!

Being a former waitress, I am a good tipper. So many people THINK they are, nope WRONG! If the server is bad, I ask them if they are having a bad day. Sometimes thats all it is. We all have those. If they say no, then they only get the 15%. If they are, then its more like 30%. I never blame bad food on the server, they didn't cook it. Ask them to have it redone and if it still isn't right talk to the manager.

Some people don't realize in most states, if not all, the servers have to pay taxes on their sales, weather they make it or not. Personally I think that is wrong, but....It IS very hard work, and sometimes their kid needs a new pair of shoes, so TIP WELL.

As for weather to return anything I find, you bet your bippy!

Edited to remove a not nice comment. *stomping off mumbling*

Yeah I'd return the rings. I go back if the cashier gives me too much change. I've been a cashier, I know that the drawer gets counted at the end of the night and you're held accountable, so returning the money is sort of a wake up call. Yes, you could argue that by not returning the money you're teaching them a lesson, but I'd say the punishment for forgetting some small change doesn't fit the crime, I'd rather just them wake up than get the boot for it.

That's similar (and why I'm not screaming 'off topic!') to the waitress issue. If someone does a good job and has a good rapport for me, 25%+ is typical (up to 50% depending on the amount of the tab). I know how hard they work, and I know difficult clientel can be, so believe they should have a good reward for making an extra effort. So here they are rewarded for good work.

Now if you're looking at the punishment end, if they treat me like crud, and are snide to me, and do a terrible job (get the order wrong, don't come back to check on me, etc.), then they get the 10-15% (again depending on the size of the tip). If they've been REALLY snide and cruddy, then they get nothing.

Luvs has an excellent point, and I totally commend you for asking them how their day is and such and seeing if they are just having a tough one. My angle is that I as a customer service rep, take care of a customer and they don't care how I'm feeling, they just want results. A minimum should be that I do my job. If I can't, then I shouldn't be there, but then I know sometimes you don't have a choice and you have to be... So that's why I reserve the 0% for only the worst of the bunch...

I tip service extraordinarily well (sometimes 100% of the bill), but I also make an unbearable public fuss when service screws up (I will try hard to get you fired and publically cry - right on the spot). So service industry people you better keep an eye out for me. Bust your balls to please the customer so that they will come back for repeat business.

I don't take it lightly otherwise I would never even approach or consider using the service.

I'd do it myself.

my parents gave an olive garden waiter a 50% tip once because the guys in the kitchen messed up and we didn't get our food for an hour and he kept coming round to our table and apologizing, and then he MADE SURE that the management only charged us five dollars for the entire meal.
