star child had a great blog about this.
i grew up in the small town of diagonal iowa, population under 300. i had 11 people in my graduating class, i didnt even finish in the top 10! no such thing as a stray dog, we all knew who it belonged to.
no police, no stop lights, no grocery store. just a bank, a gas station, a post office, a lumber yard and two bars.
you know, it just kills me when kids today complain about nothing to do. i moved to des moines after college and i thought it was a huge exciting city. but to listen to some of the youth, you would think they are gonna drop from boredom at any moment.
some times i really hated small town life. i missed playin football and wrestling because our school was too small to do it. we didnt have chemistry offered and some other advanced classes. i recall one year we only had 4 of us on the track team! the next year we didnt have enuf boys so no track team. but, i grew up with great values and an appreciation for lifes simple pleasures. i dont think i would trade that for the world.
anyone else have a small town life?

I know exactly what you mean, the town I grew up in was Burna, ky pop under 200 maybe. less than that the last time I was there. one high school for the county so we actually had about 500 kids from freshman to senior. we graduated with 94 kids in 94 lol, no football team no track team but we did have basketball and baseball, usually most of the kids that played one played the other. I hated it growing up but now that I want to start thinking about having a family, I would move back there in a heartbeat. thats the kind of place a kid should be raised

Pretending to be bored is just a teenaged effect, it's not how they truly feel. And if you think this effect is restricted to kids from small towns, it's not. You'll get the same complaint from kids in NYC.
And finally, show me someone (adult or child) who is perpetually bored, and I will show you someone who is boring.

As a teenager I moved to the second largest city in Michigan, we had over 300 kids in the class, and I bet over 100 did not graduate,4 of best friends were not there in their cap and gown....So I moved up north, 17 miles from thenearest post office, probably 2 more to McDonalds. The keys are in both cars, my boat, snomobile, and my dogs are laying in the middle of our dirt road , just enjoying the sun.I pass a farm down the road, they sell brown eggs, maple syrup, and rabbits.....Live or dressed........for all you city people........you can take them home as a pet, or you can take them home for dinner.......they don't care, they just sell rabbits. Now thats country living............

Small town? I grew up in this town where the dry goods store, grocery store, and post office were all in the same building. Twice a week, Mr. Roy would deliver still warm milk to our house with the top third that nasty cream that my parents loved. I cried. The telephone company was in a tiny little closet of a building which was a major step up because the switchboard used to be in aunt and uncle's home. We did have a doctor and a drug store, with the wooden floors that went up and down. I guess there was good and bad to it -- I got to play in huge bamboo forests, explore huge antebellum vacated homes, hang out in graveyards, and spend way more time outside than in.

i grew up in a small town in oklahoma also, it was so small that there wasn't even a bar, (probaly cause the reservation was right next door) population was defenitly under 1000.
if i wanted too go to town it was an hour drive, then if i wanted too go to wal-mart that was a 3 hour drive.
but being a little boy with a bb gun i could always find something too do.

The keys are in both cars This was the way it was in the town I grew up in (and probably still is). I never locked my doors at home, never locked the car, and you could leave your kids toys in the yard and they would be there when you went back outside!

the small town i live in now, has a few bars, but our main place too shop is wal-mart. this whole town is designed just like a square.
all the houses are on the outside and the main stuff is on the inside.
in the town i am from when growing up we would always go swimmin in the crick. but you had too make sure someone stayed on land due too the fact that the crick was a favorite breeding grounds for water moccasins

I love rabbit and grew up eating it, even though I was told it was the cat and believed it was chicken. Although I grew up in the outer Chicago suburbs I now try to live outside a small town.
Isn't it strange that we measure miles by how far away the nearest Wal-Mart is?

There is a Wal-Mart and a Lowe's in the biggest town in this county. My little town is getting a Dollar Store which is a totally big thing for this "controlled" village. Of course, I haven't seen that store yet, so the powers that be may not allow it in.
