Was doing some Google searches today and discovered that all our forum posts can be found easily in Google. Since I currently use an ID that is well known in the motorcycle circles, I got to thinking about those who use their real names and that brought me to the "stalker" thought.
I have already had one extremely nasty post on my personal blog (that was never published since I have it under moderation) outside of MD. I am seriously considering changing my ID here to something less identifiable.
So, has anyone ever had an issue like this?

I've never had a problem with it but due to this issue and identity theft, I don't use anything remotely resembling any real or known identification that I use in real life.
Call me paranoid, but being a bill collector and occasionally having to hunt people down, I'm a bit paranoid by the available information out there and how much people can find out about you without your conscent or knowledge.
Even with as little specific information as is on these profiles, they can easily find out your birthdate, combine that with your city, and if you give them your real name... bingo... they can trace anything else about you... social security number... property ownership, credit reports, you name it...
DO NOT give out your last name and birthdate or phone numbers... Until you completely trust that person.

Donna, anything that you have EVER posted online can be retrived if you know how. MD posts, bids on Ebay, Yahoo messenger sessions, online bill payments, anything at all. Don't post personal info, and don't post anything you would be ashamed to have seen by your familiy/friends/employers.
As for stalkers, the closest I've come was some crazy woman that contacted me from my profile here, and she just made prank calls to my phone for a couple of weeks.

Maybe we should talk about this more often - it's been discussed several times in various threads. If you google your screen name you'll see your profile, your posts and probably your blogs, so if you have a problem with the world knowing what you think, watch what you say! The internet, by its nature, is open to everyone and don't assume that when you google someone you're actually only finding them!
I found this googling Heaveninawildflower:
heaveninawildflower, 22, F, dancing in a distant place, east coast, 1, 7/15/2006 Guess I'm not the only heaveninawildflower who likes to dance! Ah to be 22 again, but knowing what I've learned along the way...

shchmaja06: I have always NOT used my birth day on sites that require a DOB entry (thanks to the kids & privacy laws enacted a few years back). Since I also have a professional site, do freelance writing, I know how much is available out there.
The other personals sites I have been involved with either didn't have forums or I just didn't use them. This is the first so guess I wasn't thinking about it...
I know my MySpace is listed but since I have it as private, everyone can't view it. I think that at a minimum, the links to our pages here should require someone to at least sign up. That would stop a few browsers...
Toucher: I've been too protected by the Delphiforums where I've been active for over 10 years in various topics (have hosted many forums there myself). These are highly successful forms but they aren't listed in the search engines. Call me naive...and I should know better. Sigh....

Yeah it's true and Google is one way of doing it by Googling your MD name. When the results display then go to the very last page and scroll to the bottom, click the option which reads Repeat Search with Omitted Results and you'll find a plethora of info.

Yes, we have discussed this here before. One of the reasons I try to be careful on some of the forums, about what I say.

Yes, we have discussed this here before. One of the reasons I try to be careful on some of the forums, about what I say. Right on Katt! It has been discussed many times over and yet there are some that open their lives up like a cheap romance book! I'm exceptionally cautious with information and yet I've had that wonderful experience of being stalked by someone on here. Not a good experience!

I wouldn't worry too much about things. Just use a little common sense online and you will be fine. Worrying about things can create a problem in itself. After all, most of the things we worry about, never happen at all!

As for Googling name... I know I been around the net... does not mean someone can steal my ID... it takes more than someone calling themselves Dragonlord Warlock to impersonate me. In fact one can even find footprints on the net stored in the internet archive of me... lol.... (archive.org). I have a trail that stored for as far back as the early 90s, when I was a OS/2 diehard (not that I have totally given up OS/2). lol. But still it take a lot for someone to even attempt to impersonate me because of my wide and varied persona. Especially since I am almost a polymath in a kinda way. Plus they have to worry that I will track them down.... since I am a good tracker too... lol.
I am even aware of the number of people that share my real name.... total count of that is two other people, one of which also is into IT and located in Canada. So I am aware of a lot of things.... lol. He is however shorter than me, younger than me, and not as exciting, strange, controversial, unconventional as me... lol.
