This is quite disturbing to me. The other day I had a slow leak in one of my tires, and I had to drive 20 miles to get to a station that had an air hose. What the hell is up with that? Are properly inflated tires not an integral part of a safely operating vehicle? Do the station owners just not give a shit about our safety unless they can make money from it?
When I finally found an air hose, it cost me 50 cents to turn it on, and then I had to spend ANOTHER 50 cents to air up the tires on the other side of my truck because the damn hose wasnt long enough.........so I just spent 1.00 for some air.

You're sooo lazy. Why can't you blow in the tire yourself?

Mary, queen of the blowjob!!!!!!
got sick of that crap and bought a compressor that plugs into my cigarette lighter. Ive got one of those too (little campbell hausfeld), but its too big to keep in my truck (mines just the single cab and huge speakers fill the space behind my seats) and they take FOREVER to air up a tire (mine was down to 10 lbs). Im about to get a toolbox though. Havent wanted to get one because I cant haul my motorcycles around then.......pffftttt

It just seems like the station owners dont give a shit about the safety of the public anymore. Im not whining about no "full service" stations anymore (but with gas prices like they are, seems like they could afford it), Im just talking about providing the materials I need to make myself safe.
Provide an air hose, provide access to a water hose, provide a level parking area so I can check my oil.......all they want to do is make money. Who gives a shit about the vehicle......we can just trash it and buy another.......right?

I have noticed gas stations don't take care of the air facilities anymore, and I bought a little plug in pump, but it's tooo slow.
I guess I'm picky, but not taking care of a necessary service will make me find a new gas station.
Who has time anymore to spend hours driving from gas station to gas station?
I would say their business model is broken, but then I wonder if it isn't deliberate in some fashion.
A little paranoid, perhaps...

I found out that in California, they have to suppy you with free air and water for your car.
How I remember the times I needed air when I lived in Michigan and couldn't find it.

its a culture change... Most people haven't a clue how to check air, oil, or any of the fluids in their vehicles... heck it wasn't that long ago that some gas stations actually sold Oil Filters, air filters, fan belts, etc...
Conspiracy? nah... mostly just that people don't complain about the lack of Air..
and as for the water, Now they sell premixed Antifreeze, (charging us for water, what we pay for the Antifreeze)

I actually change my own oil too.
My truck is a 4x4 and I dont even have to jack it up, I can squeeze under it and just barely reach the oil plug.......filter is easier.......takes me about 15 min total to drain and refill. Makes me feel better, then I know exactly what kind of oil, how much, my oil plug isnt stripped, and my filter really gets changed.
Fuel filters are easy on pickups too.....

A couple of observations about this:
1) too many people don't put the airhose away, so it gets run over and damaged.
2) I think with everybody suing everybody else, it would only be a matter of time before some "victim" overinflates their tire and the thing gets damaged, or causes an accident...stations probably figure, "why bother?"

Because, there are very few "gas stations" that exists today. What you have are convenience stores (Sheetz, etc) who provide gas to lure you inside to purchase items that they really make money on. Look at it as today's corner store that you drive to instead of walking.
The "gas station" was a place that actually had mechanics that knew you and your car (back then the cars were really pieces of crap and always needed tune-ups or whatever). The mechanics used air tools (impact wrenches, etc) and the station had a large compressor and a very large tank that always held plenty of air. As a service they would alow the customer to use the air for their tires, inner tubes, floating rafts or to refill their wife if, on that rare occasion, she ran out of air to chew your ass.
No mechanics=no need for the air. Price of progress for taking your cars to Pep Boys or some other chain that could care less about you. Just another example of the "little guy" being driven out of business by quantity over quality.

That's only part of the answer, one of my friends owns a c-store/gas station, and he USED to have free air and water. The problem he had, and I suspect that it's common, was vandalism. people kept cutting the air hose end off, poking hole in the water hose, and so on. He just got tired of buying $50 air hoses and $20 regulators (the thing you put on the tire that reads the pressure) so some teenagers could get jollies from watching the hose flap around when they cut the end off. So he signed up with a company that provides the air/water for .25, and splits the profit with him. When the hose is vandalised, and it still is, that company provides the replacement, andd it doesn't cost him anything.

I have been going to the same mechanic since I as 18 and got my first car.. Even when my car was under warranty, and I got free oil changes.. I went to Bobby... I only trust him to keep my cars safe. he has an airhose at his shop for anyone to stop and use.. and a water hose. he has never had a problem with damage to his stuff.. All of his clients are long-timers that trust him as much as I do. It's a good feeling knowing that he isn't gonna rip me off for repairs.. like some other places do..

I think a big misconception is " air " is free. Far from the truth, the biggest problem is the same person who can't count your change back, or clean the restroom is responsible for the maintenance. ( like that would work ) First you buy a compressor, and it has a holding tank, if there is the slightest leak in the hose/fitting the compressor will run continually attempting to keep the tank full. And it takes 100 cf of air to make 10 cf of air at 90 psi. And all the water from the atmosphere is also trapped in the holding tank, and it just destroys itself over time. As someone stated earlier, with no mechanic to do routine service, It just costs the owner money, hoping you show up pump up your tire and buy something before you leave. So, if you are going to cut costs, it would be similar to having a HUGE ice freezer running 24/7 and selling 5-10 bags of ice a week, you are spending WAY more than you are making. Air is never free, they just charge you extra for everything else. I was a compressor repair tech at one time, and I would submit a bill for $100+, for services rendered, trust me the air is not free.........There are certain stations around here, where they turn the "air/vacuum" on for you after you purchase your fuel.
