Chatting on messenger...is it a good gauge?

I recently added someone to Yahoo Messenger after a couple of emails here. Although the emails were brief, it was someone who lives nearby. I thought: "What the hell! I'll take him up on his offer to chat!"

Now, I'm a rather speedy typer. I don't expect anyone I chat with to keep up but I do expect something of substance to pass between us. If all one can say is:

"Yep"
"Kool"
"me2"
"yup I do"
"I know"
"I agree"
"I wish"

I think you're gettin' my point now! If someone can't seem to engage in conversation via messenger, does that mean they're as exciting as a bag of rocks?

I have found you can learn a lot from chatting with someone on Messenger. I really seem to get a feel on what a person is like, and if their comversation is like you say ...I bet it's the same in real life!!

Some people just can't type fast enough to keep up with an IM convo. The odds are you're right, he just has nothing interesting to say and doesn't wanna just come out and say he wants to jump your bones, but I did come across one like that once upon a time, who was really interesting face to face, boring as hell in text. But of course he did have a shaved head...

when they start doing that to me I do the same...all yes and no and just wait ......What I have found they start to ask or talk about things that take more communication then just yes and no .

actually, you can see what your messenger conversation will be like just by being in here. Some do the short approach, for laughs and chiming, some write a book on the topic stated. All you have to do is watch what is being placed on a regular basis here and you will know if you wnat to caht with someone or not.

Substance can not be ignored...even via forum...

Ya, I've chatted with your type before. I recommend that you, or any other fast typer, tape cotton swabs around your fingers to slow down your typing so that human beings will be able to communicate with you.

As a guy who usually has a lot to say......... I have a hell of a time typing, and for some reason, I find these forums to be so much easier to communicate on, and I'm not sure why. I don't mind messenger, but I definatly prefer this more, and for some odd reason my typing is much better on here, and maybe that is because I know it will be posted for all to see. I can tell you I have chatted on messenger with women who have a LOT to say, and once that happens, you go one word answers. You have no idea how long it takes me to type. On here I already have something to say, before I start, and you feel like you have to respond to every post on messenger.

And, Sadian...if every MD member posted in the forums, I would completely agree with you in that their chat style would similar to their posting style.

I think I just expect to have some kinda "spark." Not romantic, but we have to "click." Maybe this is why I've only managed to keep 2 chat buddies? Quick wit gets ya everywhere.

But Blu, you have the personality to carry on a conversation....some people don't!

Typing skills don't matter...being able to converse does!

Thanks mom, I just don't feel my personality comes across as well, it is kinda like having a conversation on my two way/phone, except, I have to ATTEMPT to type everything out. You never know when to put your 2 cents in. and sometimes you are trying to talk/chat at the same time, or you both ask a different question about 2 totally different subjects and it really gets screwed up from there.

Di, I apologize for not being as clear as possible, my mind was split between posts.

On a whole you will see what you will deal with in Yahoo if you go into the chat area of MD. Correspond a few times by Email on MD, how a blog was written, or just the post or reply's in the forums....

hopefully this made it clearer....

I don't mind a slow typer. I do mind a slow thinker. And if they can't put a coherent mail message together why bother to add them to messengers? I am not a fast typist, however I do use more than 2 fingers which gives me advantage on IM. But dang... would it kill a person to type more than 2 words at a time?
