I got into a discussion the my sister on the phone yesterday about her face to face comfrontation with a neighbor down the street, because this neighbor of hers was gossiping and spreading inaccurate rumours about her in church and in the neighborhood to other moms. The neighbor of course denied all of it, I'll bet she thought that my sister was going to kick her butt or something.
I thought hmmm  I need to bring this topic up here on MD.
So I am wondering what goes on behind the perceived war front lines in people's lives that compels them to gossip and paint people unfavorably?
Does it happen here often on MD with E-mails just as it does in real life?
What are some of the most disturbing or controversial discussions (without identities being revealed) that you want to share here?
I think something can be learned from this.

Here is a weakness i see in all most all the people i know are have known, they tend to not realize there are two sides of a COIN...What i have learned if we aren't carefull those of us who work can slowly but surely be ruined by people that are idle and lazy or have too much time. I know because i live in a house that's in a civic club community, it's horrible!!!

Some would say there are three sides of a coin, if you define a side as being a continuously differentiable surface.
Hmmm. By that definition, there actually might be one side to a coin.

Null_geodesic you do have a point, yes people are more complex than a coin and three sides would be or more or none, but if one person starts telling me something about someone else first thing i do is say, sorry i don't want to get involved. As was said by a Priest at a Chuch when i was a teen, "Do not let people use your ears as garbage cans"
Way i was raised from my childhood was if both parties aren't present don't take one persons word about what they say about them if they are not there to defend themselves

When I was young I was very quiet, especially when we moved to a new neighborhood. No one really knew anything about me, so they just made stuff up. I was actually amused by some of the crazy rumors being spread about me. A friend even had everyone convinced that I carried a gun in my purse to keep anyone from challenging her if I were around LOL Oh yeah, I blasted her for that stupidity. At any rate, rumors are what bored, insecure people get involved with. When people try to fill my ears with garbage (like the trash can analogy) I make them keep it "clean". They usually feel stupid when I say, "Oh so you only heard this, you don't really know."

Who cares?  I don't indulge in the behind the back garbage if I have a problem with you I will tell YOU! Don't forget to tip your waitress and bartenders and have a good day!

I just told someone today that there is always one side of something, the other side of it, and the truth sandwiched somewhere in between.
If you don't hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak, anything said should always be taken with a hefty spoonful of salt.
Of course, since that much salt raises blood pressure, it's better to avoid it altogether.

i'm a huge gossip in real life, but only with my ex girlfriend jeanine, and really there's no secrets between us. we practically live each other's lives.
i am very good on md...cos i only know the image you guys project onto this website. it would not be fair for me, or anyone else, to make any sort of evaluation of anyone else here.

I've never gossiped about anyone here in emails or otherwise.
Even though this is the internet, and we can say "almost" anything we want. There are people on the other side reading the words I type, and they have feelings just like I do. Why would I want to intentionally hurt their feelings?? Whether it be 1st hand from me or 2nd from someone else.
Gossip and rumors only hurt people in the end and JUST MAY COME BACK TO BITE YOU IN THE A$$!!
I have been known to BLOW UP in a blog because of a comment made about me and my grieving, but I posted the emails, and then replied to him, not behind his back, but out in the open.....sorry, but he just pissed me off!!
If I offend anyone on here, I would hope they'd be adult enough to come to me and tell me so. I keep in touch with a very dear friend, and we've NEVER mentioned anyone elses name in our emails....EVER!!

well i dont gossip but i do have My friends backs on things.. and sure didnt like it when someone called me a " stalker"  which sure isnt true since i NEVER was interested in that person and their BS.. etc.. but i sure would Like an apology..
