I know it has to do with religion, but when did the tradition of closing at 5-6:00 pm on Sunday begin? Was it one small business that did it 150 years ago, and then the next guy did it , and the next, and so on until nearly every retailer decided that 6:00pm Sunday was the designated time to close shop? You would think they would want to stay open longer to make more money.

BLUE LAWS - A name applied to certain laws, originally in force in the New England states, which were extremely rigorous.

Laws that in a number of ways restricted the doing of of various business on Sunday, the sabbath. Many, if not most, blue laws have been eliminated due to questions of constitutionality, economics and practicality.

Hmmmmmmmmmm big stores here don't close at 6 pm. I remember years ago when stores opened at noon on Sunday but now the big ones keep the same hours all week long. I live in a tiny country town and I was amazed that the local grocery store was even open today. I thought they were closed on Sunday!

in Minnesota no real estate transactions are done on the weekends, no vehicles can be sold on Sundays....

growing up, I remember the grocery stores didn't sell meat on Sundays, they were only open from noon to 4 on Sundays, and only til 6 on Saturdays

Meat wasn't sold on weekends because the meatcutters only worked during the week

Mr Kresge....the founder of K-Marts.........still (not Him!....family) have stores that bear the actual Kresge name that still will not open on a Sunday because of "blue law"
As a kid, it seemed only corporate business were the only ones to be open at all on Sat. evenings and any time Sun.!

The elderly woman who has owned a party store since 1938 with her late husband tells me that they have always done it out of respect for the local residents, the nearby church and a need for some rest.

I was working in Seymor IN, back in '81. We tried to get the boss to let us have Saturday off and work on Sunday, because there wasn't much to do on Sunday there.
He thought it was blasphemous and even got a little pissed that we asked.

When I was growing up in Ohio, nothing was open at all on Sunday, no stores, no bars, no movies, nothing. It was against the law.

Same in NY when I was a kid. Of course that was in the Stone Age...we used those Mayan calendars, the ones carved in stone.

Here in Western Michigan only in the past few years have things opened on Sunday. We are so close to Lake Michigan the merchants found the tourists simply did not understand, and the rest of our week has just plain filled up. Since I live in a resort type of town, 75-80% of their money is made on the weekends and during the summer. In most places in Michigan, you are unable to buy beer before noon on Sunday, and a few places/counties have allowed Sunday liquor sales. Just curious, how much shopping do you do after 6pm on Sunday night?

Btw---------------------------don't be blaming me for any of these damn blue laws.......

In Michigan, you can't buy alcoholic beverages over the counter or in restaurants before noon on sunday. At 11:55, there's usually a couple of people standing in the check out line with a six pack under their arm, checking their watch. But the stores themselves are open. Lots of things open 24/7/365 here in southeaster michigan

I used to work in a grocery store, and the look of peoples faces, they get up and do their weekly shopping, ( trying to get chores done to enjoy the rest of the day ). And you have to remind them about Sunday beer sales........Seems silly, but it is the law. Most are just buying it to replenish their supply, not cracking one open before noon.
the western half of the state, is very religious ( nothing wrong with that ) but we had issues of say having a pool party on Sunday, ( cuz it rained on Saturday ) and the looks on the neighbors faces, you would think someone just took a dump on their front porch.Simply getting together to enjoy the weather, your friends and family, and the pool you worked so hard to afford............luckily things have gotten better....
