I’ve been lurking in the forums for a bit  and have thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to such a myriad of persons and personalities. I’ve seen everything from fun and funny to disturbing and dysfunctional. I’ve observed wittiness, nurturing, caring, sharing, extroversion, contemplation, kindness, sadness, confusion, curiosity, and the list goes on. MD is such a microcosm in of itself. And you people (yes, I said “you people”…am I generalizing?  ) have come together and have created such a wonderful escape from ‘our there’. I’m having a ball watching/listening to you and I’m NOT addicted! I can quit anytime I want to.
This leads to my question (and I hope I’m not a day late and a dollar short and am asking a question that’s already been beaten to death). Why are you here and why, for those who do, do you (we) keep coming back? I’ve read many profiles and can certainly see what different people are about, so to speak. But what brought you here and why do you keep returning? Is/was it boredom, loneliness, seeking adventure, broadening your mind or circle of ‘friends’? Maybe curiosity or perhaps even introversion as far as the “real” world is concerned? I know that this might be somewhat of a personal question for some, and I apologize if my question seems intrusive. But if anyone would be so inclined as to share… Thanks for listening to my rambling. In general, I think most of you really rock. But that’s just my half-ass opinion.

this is an interesting question.
i came here originally because my ex boyfriend and i were "taking a break"...and i wanted some new friends.
these people were here for me throughout that whole time, and some other tough times..now they're good friends, so i'm sticking around in case they ever need me.

originally i came here to post my profile and see if mr Right was here someplace then i found my wonderful friends and so many new sisters that i love.. and i have had so many laughs and smiles and a few tears from the laughter and a great support system.. i have vented and voiced all my choice.. and even when Mr Right shows up i will stay but i will change my profile but i will be here off and on.. I'm with Red.....been on some of the dating sites for almost 2 years now...sometimes off for months, depends on my mood. This is the one I stick with...made good friends here and really enjoy that community feeling - regardless of finding Mr. Right (or not).

I'm here to find my true love. The knight in shining armor that does the whole horse, dragon, kiss (not with the horse and dragon) deal and then takes me to his castle where we proceed with the happily ever after and I get to use his credit cards. After the whole ordeal, I'd assume I'd be needing new shoes. And a few other items.
If I go away, then I might miss the shopping spree and that would be a damn shame.

I came here a few months after loosing my husband in a hunting accident, just looking for friends.
Found that and so much more, not just friends, but GOOD FRIENDS, and what a support system.
They have taught me to open my eyes to so many things, accept things that I had no control over and cannot change.
They have cried with me, and laughed with me (sometimes at me) once I gave myself permission to laugh again.
They have even taught me how to flirt again, and assured me its ok!
Working on going that next step... do I dare say it? A.....a...aaaa DATE!?!?!
I have been to one get together and we are planning the next one! 
I don't ever plan to leave.

I'm here for many reasons... None of them are dating, I've been on here for 6 years or maybe 7... I met some cool folks, swapped ideas, argued with more than a few...
I'm here because its a relatively safe place... I can spit on the floor, and call the cat a bast--d...
Some folks talk of friendship and family bonds... while it is a friendly place, if we met on the street not many would choose to nod, smile or say "hi"...
its ok... I know this place is an illusion... and that any bonds forged here are nonexistant

I wandered on here when I got a notification of an email on a site I didn't even remember signing up for...looked at the email, from this charming Nigerian prince, laughed and looked around...and found the forums. I didn't lurk for long, jumped into politics, and actually enjoyed the discussions. I've never dated a forum friend, but have now met quite a few of them and love them dearly.
The other thing is that I'm looking for a perfect match for my NYC son...he's about 6'2", dark blonde hair, blue grey eyes, doesn't smoke or drink, very athletic, never married, great with kids, is gainfully employed and very responsible. He's about a month older than Mary....
Bear - I double dog dare you to show up in Phoenix and see if you don't get a bear hug.
