Blog ...........
OK sports fans. It's that time of year. Tomorrow is the first Saturday in May when the best of the best make the run for the roses. Winner will go down in the annals of racing history.
It all began in 1875 with a horse called Aristides and in 2006 Barbaro won this race.
Such names as Gallant Fox, War Admiral, Northern Dancer, Spectacular Bid, Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Affirmed, Winning Colors will never be forgotten for being able to run the 1 1/4 mile race at Churchill Downs in the derby.
Who do you think will win the race on Saturday?
Here are the entries for the race.
1. Sedgefield 2 Curlin 3 Zanjero 4 Storm in May 5 Imawildandcrazyguy 6 Cowtown Cat 7 Street Sense 8 Hard Spun 9 Liquidity 10 Teuflesberg 11 Bwana Bull 12 Nobiz Like Shobiz 13 Sam P. 14 Scat Daddy 15 Tiago 16 Circular Quay 17 Stormello 18 Any Given Saturday 19 Dominican 20 Great Hunter
Go ahead pick one...It's ok for more than one person to select the same horse.
I'll make my selection later.
Have Fun !!!

I'll pick Great Hunter-that's my daughter's name. (My Mom use to pick dogs at the track because they had cute tails)

With no super horse, Kentucky Derby up for grabsAssociated Press
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- It's anybody's Kentucky Derby, where there's no super horse, and superstar trainers Bob Baffert, D. Wayne Lukas and Nick Zito are all absent for the first time since 1980.
None of Pletcher's five -- Any Given Saturday, Circular Quay, Cowtown Cat, Sam P. and Scat Daddy -- is favored. Neither was Barbaro, who arrived undefeated and romped to a 6½-length victory -- the largest since 1946.

^^^^^^^^^^ That's what I meant by playing the odds. More often than not, the favorite doesn't win, but most often it will be one of the ones in the 4-1, 5-1 range (Barbaro was 4-1 morning line).
You can also watch for overlays and underlays - where a favorite's odds go up at the last minute, or an underdog starts getting heavy play...I'll usually put some money on in those cases too...
Hey, it's in the blood, kinda. One of my uncles had a racehorse named after him...and like I said, mom was one of the best handicappers I've ever known.

Heaven, the size of the field has a lot to do with the odds of a favorite....4-1 or 9-2 may be the favorite.
As for 'last minute money'....For the Derby tomorrow, someone may have to bet $30,000 to affect the odds that much....and very few people bet that kind of money on a horse race..

OK, well, I've handicapped the race...
Strong contenders:
Scat Daddy Street Sense Tiago Circular Quay
I'm going with Scat Daddy on top but those four will be having their picture taken at the end (photo finish). Circular Quay is my second choice... Good luck race fans.

Some notes about the derby and it's entrants.
1. No horse has won the Breeders Cup for two year old males....#7 Street Sense. 2. Todd Pletcher has never trained a derby winner...He has five entrants: #6. Cowtown Cat, #13 Sam P., #14. Scat Daddy, #16. Circular Quay, #18 Any Given Saturday 3. Steve Assmusen, a former jockey, served a six month suspension last year and has never won a derby..He has two entries: #2. Curlin and #3 Zanjero
4. Doug O'neal has never won a derby and has two entrants: #9 Liquify and #20. Great Hunter.
5. Darrin Miller, a former jockey and has never won the derby and has two entries: #1 Sedgefield and #19 Dominican.
6. #15 Tiago is half brother (the same mother as) Kentucky Derby winner, Giacomo
7. #4 Storm In May is blind in his right eye
8..#6. Cowtown Cat was purchased as a yearling for $1,500,000...#10 Teuflesberg was purchased for a mere $9,000.
9.#2 Curlin never ran as two year old....(all derby entrants are 3 year olds.)
10. Trainers who HAVE won the derby are: Carl Nafzger, (#7. Street Sense), Tagg Barclay (#12. Nobiz Like Shobiz), John Shirreffs (#15 Tiago)..
Have Fun !

OK Sports fans....Here's the moment that you've been dying for...
My Pick(s) for the Kentucky Derby.
In my exactas I'll have #1 Sedgefield, #8 Hard Spun, #15 Tiago, #19 Dominican #20 Great Hunter.
My key horse is #2 Curlin
Curlin may be the greatest horse since Secretariat, who won the Derby and Triple Crown in 1973...He's done every thing that has been asked of him effortlessly.
Good luck to all..
