Teaching is a tough job and does not get the respect now that it used to. It's gotten harder and the rewards have gotten fewer. But those that teach do not do it for the rewards, it's for the kids and the satisfaction we get from watching those minds grow and learn. Blessings to all teachers!

I think teaching in the elementary school would be interesting. Gotta love those little ones! I wouldn't be a middle school or senior high teacher in this day and age. Happy teacher's week! (I sent hershey's kisses to my daughter's teachers!)

Thanks to the few teachers, meaning the three or four, who gave a rat's ass and did their job for a reason other than money in middle and high school.

Luv-thank you thank you.
I love teacher's appreciation week. Our principals give us all sorts of goodies. Nothing from my kids tho. Oh well, the daily hugs are pretty good.
Loreli--I only teach 1st or 2nd grade. I would never go higher, esp. not to high school. Those kids know more than I do!!

I am a middle school teacher.
I started out teaching as a certified elementary teacher. Then because of "No Child Left Behind", I ended up with a classroom of over 30 students with 1/3 of them as special education. The special ed teacher only visited the class 15 minutes a day. Wow! It was truly overwhelming!
So, I went back (full time graduate school and working) and got a 2nd master's degree in special education. (If you can't beat them, join them).
But I agree, today the job has gotten much more tough. The students can be very disrespectful if you are not armed with strong (young people) management skills and tricks of the trade. We also have to worry about students bringing in weapons (guns and knifes) drugs and pervasive street gang involvement. I actually had one gang member student expelled for threatening me with a razor blade. Now he's due back this month after a year's explusion. All this to cope with along with public school teachers now required to have a Master's in their specialty.
We've already had to "Code Blue" lockdowns in our school this year due to gun possession suspects both in the school and a triple murder only 3 city streets from our school of 1,200 children.
For us Urban, Inner City teachers, we are the least appreciated. Parent volunteering is almost non-existent. Parent backup when their child misbehaves additionally is almost non-existent in the city where I work.
When I was a young elementary student, "God Forbid" the teacher or principal ever called home! Now many students just shout back stating, "Go ahead I don't care" along with a few four letter foul words. In fact, this third marking period only 2 parents from my classroom showed up to pick up their child's report cards. I know, shocking isn't it?!
However, there are still many rewards. I get to help students in difficult situations at home. Mentor and them to visualize a better future through education.
Hats off to all those other teachers out there continuing to be a role model, mentor, nurse, counselor, surrogate mom and dad and cheer leader to those students who are sadly neglected and would not get such support from anywhere else.

Ahhw, that's nice of you!
I recently saw the movie, "Freedom Writers". That's similar to what I've experienced. A teacher's baptism into culture shock. Beyond Hollywood, in the real world, teenage students express much profanity and racial slurs within their own race within their school system.
I think they toned down the profanity in the movie dialogue because they knew it would be shown in classrooms. "That's Hollywood for ya!" Never quite the real deal.

Freedom Writers is a really good movie, but not too relevant to us primary school teachers. We're down here starting with the basics and hopefully with the munchkins before they get so disillusioned with school and life. I am in awe of special ed/resource teachers. I could never do their job.

Signme, I teach first/second grade during the summer school sessions. I really enjoy the break in routine from the big kids. And the little ones are really adorable especially during story reading and art work activities.
Lorleli, I think every teacher r e a l l y appreciates all those parents who are involved and concerned. Who follow up with their children's homework and reinforce positive behaviors at home.
THANK YOU PARENTS!!!
Teachers make a grand effort to reinforce good habits with positive rewards at school. Years ago when I was a kid, my teachers were just there to teach. However, times have changed and so has the structure of typical American families and the needs of students who attend our schools. Today, many teachers make a grand effort to reinforce good work and social interaction habits with positive feedback and rewards at school. It's also nice to see families who give a darn about their child, take time to make sure they did their homework Checked to see if they are prepared for the day (pens, pencils, notebook - all too often missing in my classroom). Daily baths, clothes washed and changed (yes, much neglect goes on!). I witness it all the time.
Children are our most valuable natural resource, because they are the foundation of our future society....
