School of hard knocks here !!!!!!! And a bit of both,,,,,,, I also have a good dose of TV smarts too....I have 5 Discovery channels, PBS, National Geographic, Discovery, History, Biography ect..........I learn where ever possible, and I try to learn a little something everyday. The secret I have found, is to find an interest, then the learning comes easy. I was terrible at school, I thought I hated learning...........now I crave it.......I guess it is all in the presentation, and the interest level, I try to know at least a little about most subjects, so I can process the info I hear, and put it in the proper context, and form my own opinions.

Edited to add- I lived my youth by acquiring street smarts, but usually just paid a lot of stupid tax, ( sure you all know what that is? ) I got sick of feeling stupid, and my quest for knowledge was awoken. I was sick of feeling like a pinball, not really in control of my life. Knowledge is power, and it was when I was sick of being powerless, I took control of my life.

hey sign . I think street-smarts are more important than book-smarts cos if and when you don't know your left and right in the society, if you don't have that attitude, that experience( which is the best teacher), just to name a few, then you are nowhere to be found. yeah I strongly believe that knowledge is power but if you can't exploit that knowledge that you have explicitly and implicitly and of course be able to employ that big brain of yours practically, then you got a whole lotta of problems.....just my 2 cents

Luckily I have both

Hey Blu--I've found out that it actually is easier to learn as you get older, probably because you now have the desire to learn. Sometimes in school, things get to be too much and you just can't take it all in. But after you're out of school, then you become more eager to learn new things.
I learn new stuff all the time. I agree street smarts are good, I just don't have much.

I disagree with that sign. it's quite the opposite, in my opinion. it's easier to learn, I mean acquire knowledge at a less mature age, especially as a kid. see, the key word is acquire.

singme I think it is also the fact, you have no idea what you need to learn to survive in the real world.....One of my favorite sayings, about this subject is..........
When was the last time an obtuse triangle came up in a conversation you were having?
Why don't we teach kids how to fill out a w-4, or a job application, or balance a checkbook....? How make a budget, and live within it? Memorizing facts, teaches us to learn, but little else......The school boards, and the teachers union have a lot to answer for ......in my opinion......Teachers do the best they can, with what is available.

Blu, I think why we can't teach kids to do those things, oh no not that we can't. we def. can do that but it simply doesn't make sense. everything's got its own time...it's a step-by-step process

I can honestly say those are all things i learned in HS. Most of it was in my accounting class and another was in job skills that every senior was required to take. However to answer wills question...I think it depends on the job...there are many "dumb" people in this world who do well from learning from books... I think common sense is the most important as someone said you have to know how to use the knowledge you obtain from those books.

For me in the medical field...there are some who graduate and have no common sense...and that is just f-ing scary. You want a nurse injecting meds into your body that can tell you everything about the drug but doesnt have enough common sense to figure out the med prescribed doesnt match your name on your arm band???

so many with "street smarts" would trade it for "book smarts", and so many swap the other way....

I spent too much of my youth in Pool Halls, and Bowling Alley's, lol... as so many have said, when I was younger, I thought I knew it all, Now, I'd like to go back to school and study Philosophy....

those guys get to sit around naked, and people listen to them.... lol
