I'm sure that most of us have heard references being made to the prospect of our future in the hands of our youth. Sometimes, you'll hear someone say, almost tongue in cheek, that things will be "scary" once the youth of today take the reins. And there probably is an equal number of people who feel that the prospect of our future in the hands of our youth is an excellent one. And as much of a cliche' as it might seem to be, like it or not, it's a reality. Our young people will, in fact, be running the world soon.
Take a look at the numbers. In the United States, Representatives can be as young as 25 years old, and senators can be as young as 30. Now, forgive my ignorance of the civics/government of other countries (call me the ugly American), but I would suspect that the average ages of government officials are similar in other countries. And let's expand that consideration to include law enforcement, emergency mitigation, and the military. Now, take a step back, look at the big picture and project a few years down the road to where the young people of today will be running things.
That being said, how comfortable or uncomfortable do you feel about the future state of the state? When you look at the challenges and accomplishments of the young people who are poised to run our world, do you experience confidence and security, or fear an trepidation? When you look at your children or your children's friends, do you get a warm fuzzy? Do you feel that some of our parents had the same concerns for their future as some of us might have for ours? When you watch the news every day and see the 'stuff' that happens with, to, and because of our youth, what goes through your mind? Do you just shake your head and think, "Boy, are we in trouble...", or do you try to make a difference in some way, or are you a "it's someone else's problem" kind of a person?

I would trust my own kids, most of the neighbor kids, and most in the school my daughter goes to. Are we in trouble? Just as much as our parents thought when they raised us during the heavy metal era!

Yes, but not due to age, just plain ol' stupidity............Those who prefer to ignore history, are doomed to repeat it.

If kids grew up keeping the values they have at ages 7,8,9 we would not be in any trouble at all. It's when they get older and come under the influence of peers who want to steer them wrong that they start to change. But having met several high school seniors this year who came into the school to work with our little ones, I'd say there are a lot more good kids than we think. It's just that the good teenagers hardly ever get talked about. It's just the few troublemakers that do. We have some wonderful kids in our school district and I wouldn't worry in the least about leaving my future in their hands.

What scares me Rhode, is that the IDIOT kids running around today are our generation's kids! WE were't brought up to act the way the kids act today, so why are OUR kids acting that way? My kids and my grandkids don't act like that. And I never ever beat them. OK...I'll admit, I turned my oldest daughter across my knee and busted her bare butt really good one time...We caught her in a lie. We just taught them respect...something that is very much missing these days.

i can dress however the hell i want cos she couldn't buy hippie clothes until she was 18.
i can be whatever religion i want cos she was forced to go to church when she really wanted to be a Wiccan.

I see what you say LGQ. Not an excuse for most people your age...But I have seen your posts here and you are NOT one of the IDIOT kids I referred to. Your Mom taught you well. I never told my kids what to be, but I taught them there were consequences from WHATEVER they did. Everything affects someone somehow.

there are famous historical quotes from ancient Greece, Europe, China, etc....
disrespectful of elders, no manners, rude and crude.... Every generation has positives, and negatives....
Ancient Rome fell, not because of the barbarians from outside the empire, but the decay from within... so our future depends on how well we prepared...

makes sense grumble...Bill Mahr did a thing about this same thing...he talked about how the older generation always complains about the kids...even in the Stone Age..."these kids today, with the wheel and the fire..."

We might be in trouble - but NOT from today's youth. If age were a static thing, it might be different. But today's kids will do the same thing we did, the same thing that generations before us did....
We had to learn to walk before we were given a bicycle.....before we were given keys to the car..... I think most of today's youth realize that you've got to start in the mail room long before you're ever considered for the CEO's position. So they do.... When you're young, you tend to see what's immediately before you. There's much more thought given to "me" at a younger age than later. But then, you get married, have a couple of kids, and all of a sudden, your thoughts turn to "us" - you're family. And all the while you're gaining a broader and broader perspective of all that's going on around you.
Today's youth will do what the youth of every generation has done - they'll mature - whether they have any intention of doing so or not, it'll happen. It's just a natural progression.
So...are we in trouble because of today's youth? ONLY if they somehow find the fabled fountain of youth and remain young forever. But the fact of the matter is that everyone will mature as they grow older, and the world is full of people at all age levels, so someone who has matured enough to handle the responsibility of running things will always be at the helm, and his/her colleagues will always be in the process of teaching those that will ultimately take their places. It's an ongoing process.
I think we should all show the utmost respect for today's youth....be kind to them....they're the ones that will be choosing our nursing homes!!!!!

People don't just fall out of the sky or crawl out of the bowels of hell. People are just people. Whether it's today's leaders or tomorrow's leaders, there are some winners and some losers. It never changes. It's the way it has been, and the way it always will be. I'm not impressed with the people running things now, but after all...they are just human.

Yes, we are in trouble.
But no more so than generations that have come before us.
And the solution remains the same.
Every parent wants "more" for their children. But until we stop the emphasis on material things and put the focus back on morals, integrity, and intellect, until we begin to reward character instead of revering celebrity for the sake of celebrity, the world will continue to be a cesspool of malcontent.

That's BS, I remember the same crap back in the 70's, people were pissing and moaning about how the hippies were gonna run the country. It all turns out fine in the end.
