I just put a lot of new batteries(AA, and AAAs) in a plastic cup. Is there any chance of them generating any heat and exploding from being stored in such a haphazard way?

They are all 1.5 volts, The only time a battery is dangerous is if it sits too long and starts to corrode.

The only thing that might be a problem is that you may have the "posts" touching those of the other batts, causing them to drain power; that's why the manufacturers always package them side by side, and never top-to-bottom. Lazareth's thing about the fridge is good-I've done this.

My Greatgrandfather told me that if your batteries are dead, to heat them up in the frying pan....and they would be charged again.
I dunno.....never tried it....I think gramps might have had a hint of Alzheimers?
