I heard this in "Walk the Line", and I thought it was so interesting that I thought I'd create a forum post about it.
God Forbid this happens to any of you lovely people, but hypothetically... If you were in a horrible car accident....
And you were lying in a ditch, dying, and with your last few breaths you could sing any song that would send out the message you would want to send to the world, and to "God"....
what would you sing?
God by John Lennon
God is a concept By which we measure our pain I'll say it again God is a concept By which we measure our pain Pain, yeah I don't believe in magic I don't believe in I-Ching I don't believe in The Bible I don't believe in Tarot I don't believe in Hitler I don't believe in Jesus I don't believe in Kennedy I don't believe in Buddha I don't believe in mantra I don't believe in Ghitta I don't believe in yoga I don't believe in King(s) I don't believe in Elvis I don't believe in Zimmerman I don't believe in Beatles I just believe.... In Me
Yoko and me, that's reality. The dream is over, what can I say? The dream is over. Yesterday, I was the dreamweaver, but now I'm reborn. I was the walrus, but now I'm John. And so, dear friends, you'll just have to carry on. The dream is over...

Kinda , but I once had a motorcycle accident, while wearing headphones, and while I was laying on my back, in a cornfield, feeling the muffler burn a hole in my leg. Boston was still jamming on the radio, and the song was more than a feeling.. So, that comes to mind first, , I'm sure I can think of something I would rather listen too......

Simple Plan wrote this song when one of their band members died in a car crash... it has stuck with me ever since....
I open my eyes I try to see but I'm blinded by the white light. I can’t remember how I can’t remember why I'm lying here tonight And I can’t STAND the pain And I can’t make it go away No I can’t STAND the pain
How could this happen to me I've made my mistakes got nowhere to run The night goes on as I’m fading away I'm sick of this life I just wanna scream How could this happen to me
Everybody’s screaming I try to make a sound but no one hears me I’m slipping off the edge I’m hanging by a thread I wanna start this over again So I try to hold On to a time when Nothing mattered And I can’t explain What happened and I can’t erase the things that I’ve done No I can’t
How could this happen to me I've made my mistakes got nowhere to run The night goes on as I’m fading away I’m sick of this life I just wanna scream How could this happen to me
I've made my mistakes got nowhere to run The night goes on as I’m fading away I’m sick of this life I just wanna scream How could this happen to me

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah
I heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord but you don't really care for music do you Well it goes like this the fourth the fifth the minor fall and the major lift the baffled king composing hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Well your faith was strong but you needed proof you saw her bathing on the roof her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you she tied you to her kitchen chair she broke your throne and she cut your hair and from your lips she drew the hallelujah.
Hallelujah,hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Baby I've been here before I've seen this room and I've walked this floor You know, I used to live alone before I knew you And I've seen your flag on the marble arch and love is not a victory march it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah,hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Well there was a time when you let me know what's really going on below but now you never show that to me do you but remember when I moved in you and the Holy dove was moving too and every breath we drew was hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah
Well maybe there's a God above but all I've ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you And it's not a cry that you hear at night it's not somebody who's seen the light it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Hallelujah

I love those songs, 7. Especially The Dance in the 9/11 tribute. And, If tomorrow never comes:
Sometimes late at night I lie awake and watch her sleeping Shes lost in peaceful dreams So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark And the thought crosses my mind If I never wake up in the morning Would she ever doubt the way I feel About her in my heart (chorus)
If tomorrow never comes Will she know how much I loved her Did I try in every way to show her every day That shes my only one And if my time on earth were through And she must face the world without me Is the love I gave her in the past Gonna be enough to last If tomorrow never comes cause Ive lost loved ones in my life Who never knew how much I loved them Now I live with the regret That my true feelings for them never were revealed So I made a promise to myself To say each day how much she means to me And avoid that circumstance Where theres no second chance to tell her how I feel *chorus*
So tell that someone that you love Just what youre thinking of If tomorrow never comes

DANTE'S PRAYER
Words and music by Loreena McKennitt
When the dark wood fell before me And all the paths were overgrown, When the priests of pride say there is no other way I tilled the sorrows of stone
I did not believe because I could not see, Though you came to me in the night. When the dawn seemed forever lost You showed me your love in the light of the stars.
Cast your eyes on the ocean, Cast your soul to the sea. When the dark night seems endless, Please remember me.
Then the mountain rose before me By the deep well of desire, From the fountain of forgiveness Beyond the ice and fire.
Cast your eyes on the ocean, Cast your soul to the sea. When the dark night seems endless, Please remember me.
Though we share this humble path, alone, How fragile is the heart. Oh give these clay feet wings to fly To touch the face of the stars.
Breathe life into this feeble heart, Lift this mortal veil of fear. Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears, We'll rise above these earthly cares.
Cast your eyes on the ocean, Cast your soul to the sea. When the dark night seems endless, Please remember me. Please remember me....

I think I will marry the woman who knows how to sing Madonna's "Rain"
it would cause me to sing this song if something like the above listed ever happened...
Queensryche.....Silent Lucidity
Hush now dont cry Wipe away the teardrop from your eye Youre lying safe in bed It was all a bad dream Spinning in your head Your mind tricked you to feel the pain Of someone close to you leaving the game of life So here it is, another chance Wide awake you face the day Your dream is over...or has it just begun?
Theres a place I like to hide A doorway that I run to in the night Relax child, you were there But only didnt realize it and you were scared Its a place where you will learn To face your fears, retrace the tears And ride the whims of your mind Commanding in another world Suddenly, you hear and see This magic new dimension
Chorus I-will be watching over you I-am gonna help you see it through I-will protect you in the night I-am smiling next to you...in silent lucidity
If you open your mind for me You wont rely on open eyes to see The walls you built within Come tumblng down, and a new world will begin Living twice at once you learn Youre safe from pain in the dream domain A soul set free to fly A round trip journey in your head Master of illusion, can you realize Your dreams alive, you can be the guide but...
Chorus

this one strikes home for me...
Superman Five For Fighting
I can’t stand to fly I’m not that naive I’m just out to find The better part of me
I’m more than a bird...I’m more than a plane More than some pretty face beside a train It’s not easy to be me
Wish that I could cry Fall upon my knees Find a way to lie About a home I’ll never see
It may sound absurd...but don’t be naive Even heroes have the right to bleed I may be disturbed...but won’t you concede Even heroes have the right to dream It’s not easy to be me
Up, up and away...away from me It’s all right...you can all sleep sound tonight I’m not crazy...or anything...
I can’t stand to fly I’m not that naive Men weren’t meant to ride With clouds between their knees
I’m only a man in a silly red sheet Digging for kryptonite on this one way street Only a man in a funny red sheet Looking for special things inside of me Inside of me Inside me Yeah, inside me Inside of me
I’m only a man In a funny red sheet I’m only a man Looking for a dream
I’m only a man In a funny red sheet And it’s not easy, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm...
Its not easy to be me

This song would be the one...means so much to me..my mother used to sing it lots...very well too...can imagine her greeting me with it when my time comes
After the Gold Rush
Well, I dreamed I saw the knights in armor comin’ Sayin’ something about a queen. There were peasants singin’ and drummers drummin’, And the archer split the tree. There was a fanfare blowin’ to the sun That was floating on the breeze. Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 1970s, Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 1970s.
I was lyin’ in a burned-out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hopin’ for replacement When the sun burst through the sky. There was a band playin’ in my head, And I felt like getting high. I was thinkin’ about what a friend had said, I was hopin’ it was a lie. Thinkin’ about what a friend had said, I was hopin’ it was a lie.
Well, I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships lyin’ In the yellow haze of the sun. There were children cryin’ and colors flyin’ All around the chosen ones. All in a dream, all in a dream, The loading had begun. Flyin’ Mother Nature’s silver seed to a new home in the sun, Flyin’ Mother Nature’s silver seed to a new home.
Neil Young 1970 I think, however covered by many...one of my favourites is Prelude...very emotional

And you were lying in a ditch, dying, and with your last few breaths... first thought would be...
now I lay me down to sleep...and pray the lord my soul to keep...
but as to the world....
hmm.... maybe this one
The jig is up, the news is out They finally found me The renegade who had it made Retrieved for a bounty Never more to go astray The judge'll have revenge today On the wanted man no..I'm not wanted by the law...
yeah this one...
I close my eyes Only for a moment, then the momen't gone All my dreams Pass before my eyes, a curiosity Dust in the wind All they are is dust in the wind Same old song Just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see Dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind, ohh Now, don't hang on Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky It slips away And all your money won't another minute buy Dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind Dust in the wind Everything is dust in the wind Everything is dust in the wind The wind

Yoko and me, that's reality. The dream is over, what can I say?
Somewhere in the distance I hear the bells ring Darkness settles on the town as the children start to sing The lady 'cross the street she shuts out the night There's a cast of thousands waiting as she turns out the light
But it's too late, too late, too late Too late for love Yes it's too late too late, too late Too late for love
London boys are staring as the girls go hand in hand With a pocket full of innocence, their entrance is grand And the Queen of the dream stands before them all She stretches out her hand as the curtains start to fall
Standing by the trapdoor aware of me and you Are the actor and the clown their waiting for their cue And there's a lady over there she's acting pretty cool But when it comes to playing life she's always playin' the fool S

well.. if I was a Hobo, I'd sing this song. Because it sounds Like Hobo Heaven...
One evening as the sun went down and the jungle fire was burning Down the track came a hobo hiking and he said boys I'm not turning I'm headin for a land that's far away beside the crystal fountains So come with me we'll go and see the Big Rock Candy Mountains
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains there's a land that's fair and bright Where the handouts grow on bushes and you sleep out every night Where the boxcars are all empty and the sun shines every day On the birds and the bees and the cigarette trees Where the lemonade springs where the bluebird sings In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains all the cops have wooden legs And the bulldogs all have rubber teeth and the hens lay soft boiled eggs The farmer's trees are full of fruit and the barns are full of hay Oh, I'm bound to go where there ain't no snow Where the rain don't fall and the wind don't blow In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains you never change your socks And the little streams of alcohol come a-trickling down the rocks The brakemen have to tip their hats and the railroad bulls are blind There's a lake of stew and of whiskey too You can paddle all around 'em in a big canoe In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
In the Big Rock Candy Mountains the jails are made of tin And you can walk right out again as soon as you are in There ain't no short handled shovels, no axes saws or picks I'm a goin to stay where you sleep all day Where they hung the jerk that invented work In the Big Rock Candy Mountains
I'll see you all this coming fall in the Big Rock Candy Mountains it's Hobo~licious !!! and a 1/3 fewer Calories than yer Regular Hobo songs !!!

this is a tough one , but the first thing that comes to mind is an old Peter, Paul and Mary song, sung by Mary Traverse: Follow me where i go, what i do and who i know make it part of me to be a part of you....
and a prayer....
