At the moment, I couldn't live on less than $20,000 a year. Luckily I do make more than that. I have way too many medical bills and other bills to pay off. But in the next five years am hoping to have all paid off so maybe I can think of retiring. Even so, would probably want a part-time job to get me out of the house and around people a few days a week.
However, I'm sure many people can live on that or less. In fact I know many who do. You need to be creative with your spending, which I am not. But if I had to, I guess I would learn. LOL
Luneib good luck with the job hunt!

My suggestion is to move down South, were jobs are much more abundant, and generally pay better as well. The tri state area has been going downhill for decades.

I think it would be difficult if there are dependent children unless you don't have to pay rent or a mortgage

I pay $2000 / month in rent. That's $24,000 / year in rent.

I'm fairly sure I couldn't survive on $20,000/yr.

Live on 20000$ US money? What's that in Canadian money? $4 million?

I have lived on it, with a large teenage son while I was getting my Master's degree. My ex decided that I didn't need support and told me he didn't care if I starved to death. God, how I miss that man (with the car, while I was driving fast).

I can't say that I liked it much. I'm making ten times that now, and can't wait for my first pay. Yippee! There be vittles in the kettle and maybe even a new frying pan fer the squirrels.

and $2,000 a month is just average rent for koyaanisqatsi in the Big apple. It's about the same out in San Francisco.

Whew, I was the first one who posted I could NOT make it on less, glad to see I'm not alone. I feel so sorry for retired people on fixed incomes now with gas costs rising all the time. I live 20+ miles from my job, I have to keep working just to pay for the gas to get there every day! (Did that make sense??)

LOL, you'd be surprised at how many people can live in less than $20,000 or even on much less than $15,000...and seem to live well.

"Priorities" and "creativity" are the key...amazin' how the Caribbean's not so far out of reach when one doesn't have a cell, TV, pets or kids...or a partner who expects to eat real meals 3 times a day.

You know I'M not creative Sunny, and my priorities are always out of wack. Not to mention my impulsiveness. Downsize...when will I ever learn to do that? Probably this year, considering my finances.

If you own your own home and are willing to not drink Starbucks *unless you grind your own beans*, you can probably pull this off... otherwise, it sounds sort of tough.

If you are working in the city, driving, etc., 30 grand would seem to be a minimum, othewise you're just existing and working to exist... no slur on those doing it now, btw, I did it tooooo....

Starting your own business is fine if you are in a position to wait for the profits to rise. The other alternative is to work full time and start your business on the side. Sadly not everyone has either opportunity. Either they do not have the health to do it or they have other responsibilities, like a family to see after.

I started a service business that was successful, but was in a position to put everything back in the business the first year. My husband had medical coverage with his job. There are so many different circumstances.

You might consider sharing expenses too. That will lower your bills considerably. Sometimes it works out good, sometimes not so good.

Since I have become disabled and widowed, I live on a lot less than I ever thought I could. Savings become wiped out fast when you have nothing coming in and medical expenses that have to get paid.

Good luck, whatever you do. Sometimes life is tough. Hang in there.

Yep if you don't have good health insurance, those medical bills eat up all your money quickly. Even if you have pretty good insurance, takes time to pay off your 20%.
Add to that my vet bills and I have to keep working!!
