LGQ! What a GREAT idea!

I'm sitting here skimming through various threads ... and finished off 1/2 a bag of Doritoes. OK, they were baked, not fried ..... BUT I dipped many of them into French Onion Dip. And I didn't even WANT it!

I find that many times I am eating out of habit. I like a snack when I sit here at the desk. Or I eat because I am bored. Or because the Cavs lost to the Spurs. Or because of a commercial on TV. Or because it's Sunday ... or Monday ... or .... Well, you get the idea.

I found last summer's clothes felt too tight so I wanted to lose about 10lbs.....What happened instead? I gained FIVE!

I plan to check back here VERY frequently.

Jen, you're always sexy.

There’s plenty of great ideas here.

As most of us know, losing or maintaining weight is no mystery. You basically have to either burn off excess calories you ingest or don’t eat/drink more than you’d normally burn up over a typical day. Simple in concept……extraordinarily difficult in execution. I can’t think of anything that penalizes you more than food. We can eat sensibly all day only to ruin things in 10 minutes by eating some guilty pleasure at the end.

I‘ve never had any bad habits or vices—never smoked or did drugs, drink little alcohol, and could care less if I ever stepped foot in a casino. But food? Forget-about-it....lol. That’s my greatest weakness. I love all the healthy stuff like veggies and salads, but also love all the pasta’s, breads, and desserts. It’s a constant battle, and I have to be terribly vigilant over what I eat.

I ran across a great site surfing the net a few weeks ago that has some fantastic info on what they "say" are low calorie but delicious recipes and off-the-shelf foods….....

HungryGirl

I know, some guys might snicker over what they think is a “woman’s” diet site, but hey, us guys get hungry, too!

You really need to combine a sensible diet with some exercise, no getting around it. Dieting alone is just too tough to stick with for most people, and if you don't exercise, the kind of radical diet you'd have to do in order to lose/maintain weight would be just too daunting.

Some people push a certain kind or exercise they like, but the important thing is to find something you're comfortable with according to your own personality. Then actually DO it. Have a regimen. Don't work out once every two weeks and think you're doing an exercise program, 'cause you ain't...lol.

Dieting alone is just too tough to stick with for most people, and if you don't exercise, the kind of radical diet you'd have to do in order to lose/maintain weight would be just too daunting.

In addition to which, the body recognizes the lowered fuel level as an emergency and steps in to protect itself - it slows its metabolism and even worse, will start hitting the muscle stores for energy, leaving the fat for the most dire straits.

If you do up the ante on exercise though, it apparently doesn't do that, and if you work your muscles with strength training you end up with a double benefit - addiitional muscle tissue speeds up the metabolism so that even after your workout is over, you're burning more calories than normal. The icing on the cake is that for most people, it helps curb the appetite as well. Endorphins kick in, you feel like you're walking on air, and just want to keep doing more.

BEWARE though! Don't break the cycle..no, not a chain letter, but a havit. It's not easy working up to the point where the endorphins kick in, but it's really easy falling back into old habits of doing the mouse or couch potato thing. Trust me on this, it's all based on personal experience, both the good and the bad points!

I lost 53 pds, in 15 mths, but it wasn't by choice.
Now, I"m hoping I can shave off another 10-15 pds. Unfortunately, when they did my last back surgery, they went through my stomach, and they said I'd have problems strengthening my stomach muscles again. So far, I haven't been able to do it.

I wish everyone the best of Luck!!
I do need to start walking again, it's good exercise for me, and it's good to get the baby out seeing the sites. Hopefully the heat tapers down a bit so I can start walking. They said it's the best exercise for my back.

So right, Heaven. Draconian diets only serve to make the body go into crisis mode, so even if you lose weight in the short run your body will rebel and you'll end up putting on even more weight. That in turn leads to more dieting and the cycle just perpetuates itself (hence so-called "Yo-Yo" dieting). Best to modify what you eat but leave room for the treats you crave, just don't go overboard with them.

Aerobic and strength training go hand in hand. Can't have a proper excercise program without it. This doesn't mean heavy weights or hours in the corner gym. You can have a perfectly good strength workout at home with just some dumbbells and resistance bands. The important thing is what I've already mentioned, whatever the program, do it at least three times a week and "stick with it". It'll be hard at first but your body will gradually adapt. We have to get away from the mindset in this society that everything should be painless...lol.

Great news about the weight loss, Ponie. Good Luck with your efforts to gain your strength back. You know we're all here for your support.

Btw, I just made some scrumptious fudge brownies I got off that Hungry Girl site. It's so incredibly easy to make. All you need is a box of Devil's Food chocolate cake or low-fat brownie mix (preferred) and mix it with a 15-ounce can of pure pumpkin. Nothing else. Bake with the instructions that come with the box. For a chocolate lover like me this recipe is a Godsend.

Thanks Mo...I lost it because of the stress of losing my son...NOT the way I'd encourage ANYONE to lose weight!!

As far as the brownies...I'd love to try them..I'm sure my kids would love something like that! Thanks again!!!

Heaven

That site is just chock full of great low-cal recipes and products, isn't it?

Some products or ingredients may be hard to find and a little expensive (because you'll have to go to a specialty shop or buy them online), but they seem to do a good job of explaining where to find them. Plus, I LOVE when they compare their healthy dish with another, calorie-filled commercial item. What a calorie difference....a real scream!....lol

I've got to try their low-fat nutty hot chocolate....yum.

This may sound inane and insane but it worked for me like magic. Have as much sex as you can...excessive humping, best sport ever . No kidding, screwing burns off fat and builds lean muscles. it works better if you could attain most every position

Cool thread. I sure need support. I eat lousy. I am training but my trainer keeps telling me I need to eat more correct food so I will add more muscle. If I add more muscle, the bigger muscles will burn the fat better. Crap. And I have finally accomplished less eating and he tells me THIS? Argh.
Now I need to reverse the NOT eating and try to eat stuff I have trouble choking down. Geez. And eating breakfast. Ergh.

I love this thread! Since last March I've gained 8-9 lbs and cannot get rid of it. Besides which I have at least another 50 besides that to lose. I'm doing water aerobics right now 4 hours a week and I just bought an exercise dvd--I tried it out tonite, it's for seniors, 50+, and I could only keep up for the first 15 min! I'll have to gradually get up to the whole thing. Since I've been out of school, I haven't been eating the way I should either. I'm gonna check out Mo's site and see what's there.

Try the book, Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type. It works. I know lots of people that have lost hard to lose weight by using that diet. I just need to take in the right foods and eat regularly. I think I will go look at that book again...sigh. I know I packed it.
G'nite!

When I'm not with Robo, I instantly gain 10 pounds. HE is my diet "machine". When I'm happy, I'm not hungry and well....sex is a great aerobic exercise! Not to mention the walks he takes me on! LOL

Right now, though, I have my bag of dark chocolate M&M's to take to bed with me.
