depends on what they are called in diff parts of the country TT .. a star socket can be one where the socket part looks like a star or one that has those little pins in it to adapt to any shape bolt/nut ...where as a star wrench can be a four pointed tire iron..

You and I both know what their real names are SUPPOSED to be I'm sure darlin (I ran a tool dept for a few years ) BUT the general population isn't so um informed okay?? oh BTW I own all four .. star tire iron, torx set (t handled and bits and socket) hex set (t handle bits and sockets) the pinned inside socket thingy and a multitude of other dohickeys Im kinda a tool nut 
i just thought of a good come on line to pick up men.... "hey big boy wanna come up and see my tool chest??  "

Unless. they are referring to a 12 point socket - which, according to my sisters, is the star shaped socket.
Oh! I can turn a wrench all right. Thats why I not only drag race my own car on the 1/4 mile track (Super Gas class on the BOR circuit), but I also pit crew for a Top Fuel sand drag car (track time 2.66 @ 159mph), a Top Alcohol Funny car (running in the low 6.30's), a blown alcohol hydro drag boat (first pass in it was 140 mph - which felt like the fastest thing I have ever been in in my entire life and honestly scared the s*** out of me) and occasionally a K-boat.
I own a JCB backhoe and learned how to operate it from my father - it was his life.
Learned how to work on cars, heavy equipment and many other "manly" tasks from my father. God bless his soul.
I own a Snap On toolbox and complete set of mechanics tools that would make most men drool. After my father passed, I inherited 3 Craftsmen toolboxes - one for basic mechanic - but equipped to the hilt, one for heavy equipment - the HUGE tools and one geared more towards airplane use - he was a pilot as well.
I have never taken my car in for a tune-up, I own a transmission shop with my ex husband and I also do all my own home repairs and fabrication, whether it be wood, stone or metal. Remodeled my home a few years ago, and never had anyone come in to help. Turned out BEAUTIFUL!
I would rather learn to do something myself whenever possible....except for plumbing - especially where sewer lines are concerned.

By the way I am also a tool nut and I have every tool know to man. I even have a bobcat. Right now I am waiting for dewalt to come out with their new compound miter saw with the laser. I have four of these saws but I always buy the latest. Now i have to admit, I dont neccessarily know how to properly use all of them but I can say i have one. Now let me see that tool chest.

sad thing hereI lost A LOT of my power tools in the fire in 2000  so just scraping by with the basics .. really sucks when I have to BORROW a tool

I hate that too! So everytime I need a tool I go and buy it. I dont borrow jack. If I need it I go and get it. I do not borrow tools. But I am a tool shed for all of my friends and neighbors.

A socket fits over a fastener not into it. If someone is calling a torx bit a star socket they have the concept all wrong. I have heard some people call a 12 point socket a star socket but that is just a colloquial name not the actual name. Since I don't know what the tool is that is required for the job this is the only information I can give you.
