The other night I saw a commerical that I wanted to literally at. .....ok...the senario...
Teenager walks in to the room while "daddy" is trying to do something and asks him for $80 bucks for a new pair of jeans. (Let me get this straight....unless she's modeling for Calvin Klein....she doesn't need $80 pair of jeans)....sheesh I'm getting old...lol.
Now, "Daddy" asks why?....of course she says "Because all (everyone else) my friends are wearing them......(Now, I'm giving the "puking sign").....Daddy dearest asks who makes the Jeans and promptly leads her to his computer where he makes an investment on the "Designer".....then reaches in his pocket to give her the $80 bucks......then she mentions something about some new shoes....and laughs to say "Just Kidding Dad"...
Ok ya'll.....I'm doing a "Forest Gump" thingy.......STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.
I literally wanted to call that investment company and tell them the correct senario to their commerical is for "Daddy" dearest to lead his daughter to the computer and invest the $80 bucks.....(or whatever).....and then tell her that when she gets a "J-O-B"...she can invest more wisely instead of the jeans she so badly wanted......
I thank God everyday I don't have a kid like that............

80 bucks for a pair of jeans these days is cheap...They of course wasn't talking about Wranglers or Levi's.....I wish I had the money to shop like that for my children...But they will have to settle for wal-mart for right now.

Sounds kinda cute to me, but I can see your point. We're a greedy lot, aren't we?
But $80 is really only midrange for decent jeans, I think, at least in this area. I saw a pair the other day that were $210, and it wasn't even in a super-trendy store. I'm not paying $210, because I'm poor, lol, but they were awfully nice...

My parents would have first asked what happened to the money I earned working on the farm. Next would have come the speech about my parents not being made of money like my wealthy friends parents. Then they would have given me $80 with instructions to by 3 cheaper pairs of jeans and bring the other $20 back ...or else.

Well, I'm not poor but it'd be a cold day in He** before I invested that much....of course now I live in the south and don't live up where cost of living makes you pay that much. I'm sure I could do just as much in my cheap jeans than the ones who wear the expensive ones......and then some...lol.
I do like nice things but with this commercial I see what's wrong with people these days.....trying to keep up with the "Jones's"......especially influencing the younger folks to think that's what they're suppose to "Grow up to be".....
Teenagers (kids in general) will forget what "toy" you bought them throughout the years......the thing they will never forget is the qualilty of time you spent with them...."Memories of You".....jeans can be replaced....you cannot.
Sheesh...I'm sounding like "Mother Goose"....sorry ya'll but when I think of the times (like the other night) when me and my daughter were crying in laughter at a restaurant....I can truly say...it was "Priceless"..... and all I bought was dinner

I agree with you, Lady. This year, my 13 year-old son's list has absolutely nothing on it that costs less than $50. Video games, software, electronic gadgets, etc....it's just unbelievable.
In order to afford any of it, I'll be wearing $40 Levi's this year. The same pair
But I have to say that I (reluctantly) understand his point of view. Peer influence in school is terrible, and in my opinion, a child needs at least some of the symbols of his society in order to avoid developing a serious inferiority complex. It's no different now than in any other era...in the caveman days, it was probably shiny rocks ("Ug...me have most shiny rocks...you have none...you suck!") All that great jewelry and pottery we see in museums? All status symbols of some kind.
Human nature...I hate it, but it's unavoidable!

ladyhawk, i wouldn't spend $80 on a pair of jeans when i can get a decent pair at wally world n have enough money left to put gas in the car, etc. when i was younger, i just wanted to be n band or a brownie, but we couldn't afford it. my mom would've told me i could buy what i want when i move out n get my own job.
parents like that r truly doing their children a disservice. of course ppl want their loved ones to have what they need n want. children should also understand about sacrifices n looking ahead n the long run. i'm not paying any designer's bill or bad habits. i have some of my own (rent, utilities, car payment).

Luckyfrog,
dude - i'm with you on that - i'm not ashamed to say - walmart jeans for about $15 bucks (or y'know, i could goto JC Penney and/or Sears and pay twice that for the exact same pair - just to say that i paid more for them...heh heh heh)
if i'm going to waste that much money - it's going to be on something that is special, important, and beautiful - y'know, ....like video games and/or dvd movies...heh heh heh

I buy cheap jeans for myself. My kids get what they want (i.e. what their friends are wearing). My daughter's jeans are $85/pair... Size 0 - so there's about as much material in them as the average washcloth.
Regarding the commercial - the point was that the stock tip was worth the $80 and then some. By investing in the latest trends, the smart-investing dad could afford to buy his daughter $80 jeans. I know everybody understood the point... just sayin...

I never understood why people would want to spend so much money on one article of clothing or buy expensive "name brand" clothing to just fit into society. Americans are to materialistic.

Yep. I agree. But, for me there's more to it. My kids go to private school with the kids of some very wealthy people (names you would recognize). For years, they were given hand-me-down clothes from these rich kids - one example is my daughter got dresses that were handed down from Sara Furgeson's ( Fergie) daughter. Nice stuff - but still... So now that they are older, I want them to have whatever they want. I'm trying to make up for when we couldn't make ends meet - and there is some social pressure to not dress out of the dumpster.

see Steve, that's where i have to draw the line. Now, i'm certainly not opposed to perusing and buying from the local goodwill - but i limit my wares to shirts - i'm sorry but my feeling is that....my boys have no business going where other people's boys have gone before....LMAO....
on the topic of jeans, am i the only person who is amazed that people pay GOOD DANG MONEY for jeans that look like they've been spit on, sh*t on, p*ssed on and then left hung out to dry w/o ever being washed - i mean - WTF??? lmao.........
it's amazing what "fashions" people will buy into just because they're fed it as being fashion. if looking clean neat and presentable is out of fashion, call me out of touch! :D

eBay!!! All the wunnerful stuff in that place.. I have gone shopping for my son and myself several times... good quality.. and sure.. most of it is used, but I see it like this.. my son is continuously growing.. why spend $200 + on clothes when they will out grow them in a season??? He is an only child so there is no "hand me downs"..
I have also been wearing the same Levi's since.. uhm.. *counting on fingers*.. 2000 :) They still fit.. still comfy.. Can't throw away a good pair of demins :)

This is where I am glad I brought my boys up to be "different". Some times they started their own fashion trend too.
Don't get me wrong, I did get them shoes that they liked. (although I stopped at the "nike" thing) They have worn hemp shoes by Adidis, their own t-dyed shirts too.( Remember those?) Oh and taking a pair of new, cheap jeans and running over them with the car a couple of times, fraying the bottoms,,,
Never would I pay over 40.00 for shoes, or 25.00 for jeans.

Wow $80 smackers! I remember when $40 was out of this world for a pair. My oldest daughter when she was 17, she refused to go to a Target, K-Mart, etc. She wanted Mall shopping or nothing. Sooo, I said one golden September morn, do you want new clothes for school? Replied yes! I said ok, You have $150.00 to spend. I will take you anywhere you wish to shop, but thats all you get. You do have to buy pants, shirts, shoes and jacket/sweaters. Well, we walked around the mall a half a day while she shopped.
It was so neat seeing the expression on her face as she shopped. The following month, she got a part time job!
Note: Single mom raising 2 kids on one income.
