We all have our own idea what being rich is, what is yours?
And a second question, do you find yourself with class envy?
All I know, is whatever $ you put in front of your definition, the rich of this country keep it moving. I have never made one $ from a poor person. Anybody who makes money, spend it, and the more you have the more you spend.
Yes, I find myself in class envy occasionally I try to purge those thoughts like I do jealousy, disliking someone for what they have does not improve my life one bit, so why waste my time.

To be finacially rich would be to never have to worry about paying a bill and being able to take a real vacation at least twice a year. As for class envy, not very often. I've already learned that one cannot buy happiness.

you are speaking monetarily??
k .. hmm well its hard to determine anymore who REALLY is rich.. with all the lines of credit and mortgages loans etc...a person can live in a mansion drive a fancy car be out every night yet be so buried in debt they couldn't cash out on anything they would lose more than they invested... to be truly rich is to have a roof over your head food in your belly and a loving family and someone to share it with ...
I have never found myself with class envy... I know that if i really wanted to live that lifestyle I could .. I have done it before... the fancy cars etc.. its all a big headache a constant NEED to attain more to keep what you have already to be better than everyone to have more.. for what end?? to have the most toys when ya die?? to have others envy you for you material possessions?? nahhh i rather be envied for my loving family and friends besides real class knows no envy

I have never experienced class envy.. just because ya may have money doesn't mean you have happiness .. or class.. The guy that owned the company I worked for never seemed happy at all.. all he was concerned with was making more money.. his wife and kids enjoyed his money.. he was constantly bragging that his grandkids would never be able to spend all his money.. and just a few weeks ago I noticed that his daughter has everything he owned up for sale.. even his beloved Ponderosa Plantation.. he would roll over in his grave.

Got a ? For ya.
Nike corporation makes its money from? Air division of nike (Owned by Michael Jordan) makes its money from? The various wheel manufacturers make their money from? And dont froget the spinner wheels too! The multitudes of lending institutions make their money through inflated interest rates and fees which come out of the pockets of the ?
So I cant exactly agree with your assumptions. On the other point, I dont spend any money because I am always working. So the theory that the more you have the more you spend isnt exactly true. The differences are where as an average persons cell bill may be only 79 dollars a month mine usually floats somewhere between 1100 and 2500 a month. But the purposes are different. Besides rich for most people is only those wholive in excess.
Thats just my opinion.

I would settle for enough money so that I didn't have to worry about my phone or lights being turned off.. or being able to afford to buy the meds that I need.. where I live doesn't much matter to me.. I can make a home anywhere I am at.. altho I miss the little cabin in the woods terribly.. even though I almost froze my tush off there last winter..

My point is, if you buy a car, if you buy a house, if you fix up your house, if you have a family, if you own any toys, every single thing someone buys, puts someone somewhere to work. For the person who makes it, ships it, stocks it on the shelf to the cashier to rings you up.......Rich ( or should I say richer ) people make or create jobs.

Unfortunately alot of furniture manufacturers are making the Chinese richer.. Even then, the shipping contributes to the economy...but you're right - I bought a dining room set from a supposedly North Carolina manufacturer, and was pretty peeved when it took months to get it, and was told it really WAS coming from China...from what I understand though, they build the furniture, but the finishes are applied here. Still a bad move, I should have cancelled the order when I found out!
Back on topic though - to me, rich is being able to buy pretty much what I want without a lot of thought about the price (fortunately I never developed really expensive tastes), and do pretty much what I want. Envy? Nope. I'm just very grateful for everything I've been blessed with.

For those who say you NEVER envy of those who are rich...i hardly buy it! I do not sit around and think to myself "god the life that must be" 24/7 but occassionallly I do think god that must be nice, however as beck said if you want it you can get it...its just what you are willing to do or sacrifice to get it. To me the sacrifices right now are not worth it. I have considered going on to be a NP or even go to med school after im done with nursing to make those big bucks. I don't feel it is worth the sacrifice of missing out on a great portion of my sons life with interns and residencies so I can go on vacation 3 times a year and not blink and eye. Perhaps after my kids are grown that will be another option.
I consider one to be rich who has excess money around after all bills mortgage car payments ect are paid for. I do agree with blue that A LOT of people spend according to their income...the more you make the more you spend. However those who are good investors come out ahead. Joe Blow can make $100,000 a year and have the finest things he ways but be in debt up to his ears, and then one with the same income can live responsibly on that 100,000 and still put away or invest 50% of his income.

yep exactly princess.. anyways unless everything is PAID FOR .. its not totally YOURS is it?? you might live in a million dollar house but Ill bet betting the bank owns most of it ..unless you have enough $$ to pay for it outright dame goes for any material item.. unless its paid for its not really yours alone you are indebted to someone... and no one who is LITERALLY rich owes anyone

its funny how definitions of rich vary... back when I was working, I had a modest 3 bdrm ranch house on 1/2 an acre, 3 harleys's, a new truck, and a new car, and was always looking for ways to make more money, but, my bikes I paid cash for, I never borrowed more than a year loan for the cars...
when I was medically retired, I sold everything... while waiting on my pension, (6 month waiting period), I paid my medical bills etc, with what I had from the sale...
these days I live frugally, I have my black harley, (purchased used, paid cash), a 25 yo truck... and an old honda sedan for winter driving...
but, I have family and friends, and life is good... so I feel very rich

To each her own - my boss's wife is a doctor, currently doing her residency, she'll then be going into a family practice that will allow a real schedule. In the meantime he plays superman - bathes the baby, takes her for her shots, all that good stuff...and he idolizes both of them. If I were going to envy ANYBODY, it would be her! She didn't grab the brass ring, she grabbed one that's solid gold!

I wouldn't call it class envy, there are times I wish I could buy something and if I can't oh well. Its not that I look at another group of people and say damn it must be nice.
I've been poor as hell and damn close to living on the streets and to where I'm at now, would I trade it back in? Nope but I know what it is like and refuse to let it happen again.
I plan on working for myself real soon so all blame is on me and nobody else

I know this comment will have people jumping all over me however i guess thats what i do best is piss people off! So I believe that everyone for the most part is given the same amount of potential. What you choose to do with that potential is what divides you from other people. You may have to work a little harder to get from point A. to point B. than others however you were still given the same chances in life. You choose the life you lead, and I will stop at that im sure you can fill in the rest yourselves. But I get soooo tired of hearing people bitch and moan about their current state of living yet refuse to do anything more to enhance it.

Not all of us were given the same chances in life.. I would love to go back into the medical field full time.. and make the "big bucks".. but not gonna happen with my immune system .. I would love to do alot of things that others do for a living.. but some of us were born with physical challenges that stop us from reaching those goals.. or returning to the jobs we once loved.. once again.. you paint with a mighty broad brush there princess..

I've been teaching for 30 years now. When I hit 20 years, the state stopped giving me raises as I had reached the highest pay step. I did get a raise a few years ago when our governor was up for re-election. I guess I could quit teaching and get a different job where I would make more money but I actually like working with kids and most of the time enjoy my job. Yes, I wish I had some more money so I could set aside something in case I need long term care someday. I wish I could pay off all my bills. I can't buy a new car for 5 more years as I did take out a loan to pay off the majority of my bills and one of the terms is no large purchases, like a car. I would like to be able to take one nice long vacation every year. But all in all, I have a pretty good job, a nice house and a fairly decent life. Sometimes I do wonder how people who make less money than I do are able to get a new car every other year, have all the latest electronics, go on nice vacations and be able to take their family to the doctor whenever necessary.
