I thought this was interesting.
Only in California...sometimes they do do things right!
This is the message that the Pacific Palisades High School ( C alifornia ) staff voted unanimously to record on their school telephone answering machine. This is the actual answering machine message for the school. This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students and parents to be responsible for their children's absences and missing homework. The school and teachers are being sued by parents who want their children's failing grades changed to passing grades - even though those children were absent 15-30 times during the semester and did not complete enough schoolwork to pass their classes. The outgoing message: "Hello! You have reached the automated answering service of your school. In order to assist you in connecting to the right staff member, please listen to all the options before making a selection:
* To lie about why your child is absent - Press 1
* To make excuses for why your child did not do his work - Press 2 * To complain about what we do - Press 3 * To swear at staff members - Press 4 * To ask why you didn't get information that was already enclosed in your newsletter and several flyers mailed to you - Press 5 * If you want us to raise your child - Press 6 * If you want to reach out and touch, slap or hit someone - Press 7 * To request another teacher, for the third time this year - Press 8 * To complain about bus transportation - Press 9 * To complain about school lunches - Press 0 * If you realize this is the real world and your child must be accountable and responsible for his/her own behavior, class work, homework and that it's not the teachers' fault for your child's lack of effort: Hang up and have a nice day! *If you want this in Spanish, you must be in the wrong country.

Edited to add:
I like the subject line, except that it is a blanket statement and I feel it should be qualified, as sometimes the kids straighten out and manage to succeed where the parents failed.

as sometimes the kids straighten out and manage to succeed where the parents failed. And sometimes the kid never straightens up....does that mean the parent failed?

Urs, nope just means they are screwed up. Parents can affect how there kids turn out but cannot dictate how they will be. Many good parents end up with kids who have serious problems through no fault of their own.

You're right but sometimes teachers indeed ARE the problem.
I've had teachers who didn't care about their jobs and it affected the class, who gave out bad grades for fun, and who were purposely mean to students they didn't like.
My Acting teacher in high school really hated me from the first day I walked into class. She didn't like the way I dressed or something, I don't know, and she didn't like my laid back attitude. I was ace at Acting but she never gave me higher than a C. She used to have outbursts in the class, screaming at kids who were just trying to pass the class even though they really didn't want to be in it, they just needed to fulfill the arts requirement. She would call kids names, and she even hit a kid with a trophy once because she was so angry at him. She's known around the entire school for being a right well cow.
I also had a teacher in 8th grade named Mr. Carter. For some reason, Mr. Carter hated his job and just didn't give a rat's arse about it. He would never teach and was never available for help if students needed it. His idea of "teaching" was assigning 20 pages of reading and sitting at his desk reading his email.
In those cases, the students are not at fault, I don't care what you say.
Young students are not geniuses most of the time and often need to be guided.
A school is really not the "real world". The job of a school is indeed, or should be, to prepare students for the "real world" and when they are not doing that, there is a problem.
Also, while screwed up parents often breed screwed up kids....I've seen cases where screwed up kids spring up out of nowhere because of friends or because they just felt like "rebelling".

Lip Gloss,
I love you to death but I totally disagree with you.
Its not the responsibility of the school teachers or anyone but your parents to raise the kids.

I'm not talking about "raising the kids"
I'm talking about the fact that sometimes teachers are the reason that kids don't get an adequate education.
Not every academic responsibility falls on the shoulders of the students, especially when there is a teacher that is irresponsible, or just plain mean, as my former Acting teacher was.
A lot of people strongly believe in this notion of "meritocracy" when in fact it's a myth....

Thats not the schools job nor the job of the teachers.
My teachers didnt prepare me for the real world. Neither did college and I went to an Ivy League School. And college didnt teach me anything other than there are more ways around the block than the one you thought of.
BTW, No one can prepare you for the real world because it is totally unpredictable. You just have to get out there and mix it up. However they can give you the tools you need in order to survive.

I disagree.
School should be teaching math to prepare students to be able to pay taxes, write checks, etc.
They should be teaching English to help students to speak and write properly so they sound like a proper human being when going on job interviews and when generally interacting with other human beings and don't come off as an uneducated hack.
A school helps prepare students for interaction in the "real world" by teaching social skills (inadvertently). School teaches kids how to talk to other people by introducing them to different kinds of people that perhaps their parents would not want them to be exposed to. A school is a microcosm of society and I don't think in any way it can be considered the "real world". It doesn't function like the "real world".
Health classes teach sexual education that give students useful information about safe sex. I even took a class called "Marriage and Family" my junior year that taught all kinds of life skills pertaining to just that. They even gave every student a computerised baby to take home for the weekend that cried.
Like it or not, school does help to prepare kids to get out into the "real world".

Health classes teach sexual education that give students useful information about safe sex. The republicans stopped that years ago.
I dont disagree with the curriculum. I do however disagree with the premise. Our schools arent letting us down our government is. Teacher have to try to do their jobs with their hands behind their backs. Had I gone to school in this day and time I would be an idiot too! Teachers spend more time with discipline and less time left for teaching.
Tell me why schools have to have metal detectors in them?
My dad had to come to school one time, and that was the last time any body called about me. He beat my ass so bad i thought I was a run away slave. He didnt go after the teacher. He did his job as a parent. When we went to school we went well behaved and appreciative of what the teachers had to give.
