The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world?
The Giants played in New York and the Dodgers played in Brooklyn?
All the people that worked in gas stations and convenience store spoke pretty good English?
"Personal Ads" were in newspapers and just as phony as they are on-line today?
Girls in Russia did not DARE to try to get someone to bring them to the USA?

The Dodgers had the Brooklyn SymPHONY playing...and the players lived in middle class neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Also the Yanks - Whitey Ford had his boat docked next to ours and Mickey Mantle misbehaved in the local pub.
Not sure about the Russian girls though...I had tea at the Russian legation fairly often (it was around the corner from my high school). I think they'd have dared if they could have communicated directly with the guys here...
TV - Ed Sullivan, Milton Berle, Howdy Doody, etc.
Maybe this belongs in the Over 50 forum?

Gas being 29.9 gallon.
Walking around downtown at night in a major city as a teenager. And NOT getting shot OR arrested.
Candy for a penny that actually tasted good. The best donuts in the world made by an old german guy for $.10
10 cent phone calls.
So..uh...what the hell happened?!?!

My mom got e a set of whit girly lamps for my bedroom with those stamps I remember an aunt got a toster, and another aunt got a mixer I think it was. The females in the family traded with each other at different times for things they wanted with those books. Anyboy remember when the grocery store used to ahve the big weight scales in front of the checkouts to weigh yourself. Well the government came along and utlawed those for us too

29.9 cents a gallon
That was when the price went UP!
I paid 18.9 for gas and 16-cents a pack for cigarettes.
Of course, later, when in the service, cigarettes were $1 - a CARTON (in Iceland.)
So, to "beat the high cost of living," every month or so, we would fly to Goose Bay in Labrador where the PX had cigarettes for 80-cents a carton.
We collected thousands of dollars, hundreds of ration cards and off we would go.
Funny, when we got back to Iceland, there was never an extra carton left in the airplane and nobody ever complained that he did not get the right quantity he had paid for.
I guess "the times they are a'changin'"
