Are holidays really about money?

I think that our country keeps itself in a state of perpetual overspending due to the commercialization of all the major holidays, and the pressure to participate.
Christmas was never meant to be a spending frenzy every year.....nor was easter, nor was valentines day, nor was etc etc......I think we, particularly in the US, have found that it is easier to "buy our participation", than it is to really feel what the holiday is about.
Am I the only one who feels this way?

I don't buy into the whole "must shop" craze. I buy a few gifts for those most important to me but I do that throughout the year anyway.

Yep, last year was our first Christmas in AZ and it was a 'big gift' year...unusual for me. This year's going to be back to normal, little things. Going to a party tonight with a theme I really like...a rummage party...wrap and bring a gift that's something you might otherwise contribute to a rummage sale. No 'bought' gifts allowed.

I just enjoy being around my family and friends. I think the single best gift I give my daughter and nephew is roasting marshmellows and hotdogs during the holidays.

It started the Christmas my dad died(22 Dec1998)....I was trying to break the somber mood for the kids. Anyways, I went out back....dug a hole....built a small fire...and we found some sticks to roast our marshmellows. We enjoyed a little laughter and had a little rememberance of family.

Now, every year this has become a tradition that I'm sure will be carried out thru many generations. My nephew insists that we do this every Christmas....(he's 14 and my daughter is 15).

Traditions are a very important part of holidays, especially when children are involved for those are the things they will remember and pass on to thier own families. It's also a time for me of being thankful and helping those less fortunate when given the opportunity. And, with that being said, I spent a small fortune on my kids this year, because I can and I want this to be the most amazing Christmas ever! Just so you don't forget what it's all about, I see nothing wrong with overdoing and overindulging just for the fun of it!

It is about being with family. It not what you get but who you spend your time with.

I think holidays are geting out of hand, to me it seems like alot of people think its a big competion to see who can spend the most and whos worth what. I feel alot of people are missing the real meaning of holidays the birth of christ, spending time with loved ones, being grateful for what you have, helping those in need. I don't like the whole buying a ton of gifts, I only buy gifts for my sisters because there all young. In my family we always have a tradition of making a gift for everyone and I think thats wonderful because it is something that comes from the heart.

If you don't want to see the holidays commercialized like they are now, they must be moved to a month that is not the end of a fiscal quarter or fiscal year. Or better yet- stop celebrating the rather useless ones that exist only for corporations- i.e. valentines day, halloween, mother's day, father's day, grandparent's day, deceased maiden aunt's day, bloated uncle's day(that one i made up)

And can we finally get rid of arbor day and columbus day?

I think for Arbor Day, when money grows on trees, maybe then it will be fed holiday.

Lj I better get a damn good present from you...

Personally I would just be happy if I could get to go home for a few days at Xmas...That would make my holiday. I can't though and that kinda sucks...I'll be crying at Xmas...I miss my mommy

My Dad passed away unexpectedly about year and a half ago. This makes the second go around for the holidays without Dad. It will be the unspoken issue on everyone's mind, but no one will speak of.

It's the way of things, it's still weird though as we had no reason to believe that he wouldn't be around for another 20 years minimum.

I can't imagine holidays after the passing of a child.
