Just for reference, we are not Indians. Indians come from India. Native Americans were here before this country was invaded by Europeans and Indians.

We teach the term Native Americans to our 2nd graders but have to tell them that it means Indians because that's how some have learned it. But when we talk about Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims it's the Native Americans who helped them, not the Indians. So we are politically correct down here in Texas schools.

Hmmm, who discovered the continents which are commonly referred to as the Americas?
Columbus? Nah, it is a discredit to the original inhabitants of this land to claim that Columbus discovered this place when in fact people, and nations/ societies were already living here. No Viking, or Chinese adventurer discovered it either.
It's very arrogant not recognise existing civilizations prior to Columbus as the real discoverers of both the Northern and Southern continents.
That's pretty much all I want to say about Native Amerticans in this thread.

You're a bit late to tell us this. The politically correct terms have been out a few decades now.

Thanks signme, though I don't think it's really a matter of political correctness - more like a reality. Indians really are from India.
reference to what? What brought this on? Just general reference. I see it time and time again, so I thought I'd bring it up.

It's interesting to know that a Native American called himself an Indian. (according to that blog)

He explained to me in email that he did that because so many people refer to Natives as Indians.

My daughter is part Sioux. Either term is ok with me
It's kind of like we use to call people who couldn't hear deaf. Somebody changed it to hearing impaired. Years later, some didn't like that term and changed it to deaf and hard of hearing. Are dark people black, negro, or African-American now days?
NONE of these terms seem derogatory to me. If they are, please excuse.

Yep Godless is absolutely right about that.
In the 1500s the English were looking for a Western route to India (the legendary "North West Passage"), far north of the American territories the Spanish settled. The English ships landed on the NE seaboard and believed they had found "Indians" when they encountered Mohawks ashore, a population they later exterminated.
It was the first time ever a well-known, defineable human population and culture was removed from the face of the earth. The second time that happened was in Tasmania, also due to the Tasmanians' encounter with the English desire for farming land.
The Americans and Australians are largely descendants of European emigrants. I'm sorry to say as an Englishman, however, that the English were guilty of both "depopulations," not their American or Australian descendants, who merely arrived later for the most part. It was not a deliberate genocide as such, but military action and resettlement disrupted the populations so much that they were no longer sustainable. The British army and English settlers were mainly responsible for the invasions of these territories.

Hi Angel, that map is absolutely fascinating ! THANKS Found the first English map here (not completed until 1599):
http://www.lib.virginia.edu/small/exhibits/lewis_clark/exploring/ch1-5.html
The English map was much later than the Spanish, Portuguese and French maps. Sir Francis Drake was of course over in America for tobacco and a pipe in the 1550s. And who else? Sir Walter Raleigh? (Potatoes and cocoa I think?) Godless, I understand they also brought some "Indians" back with them as "trophies"...
